Can we name our daughter Grace, or is our surname stopping us?

Our daughter arrived yesterday - a Halloween baby Wink we absolutely love the name Grace.

Our surname is Samuels-Grey (yes, we know it sounds like 'Samuel's grey')... We can't have a Grace Samuels-Grey, can we? Grin

I think it sounds lovely!

How lucky having a snuggly little newborn, mins 4 1/2 months no & I don't know where the time has gone!

EdenFalls2016 · 01/11/2016 17:35

As Grace Grey sounds odd, I doubt she'd do that... She would either pick Grace Samuels, or keep it double-barrelled...

Mitzy

Love the imaginative character sketches! Are you a writer, by any chance?

Many congratulations on the safe arrival of your daughter Flowers

If YOU and DP love the name Grace (as do I), and it seems an instinctive 'fit' with your little one, then go for it. We all know, deep down, when a name just feels right for a particular baby.

(Sidenote: perhaps she'll grow up with amazing enunciation from years of clearly separating out 'Grace. Samuels. Grey' to distinguish from 'Greysamuel'sgrey'). Good skills to have (future broadcaster/ actor/ public speaker etc. ?!).

I really like 'Ivy Samuels-Grey', I have to say...

Partly because Ivy's more unusual, partly because the two small Ivys I know are both sparky, funny and delightful girls. Which always colours your judgment...

Allalonenow · 01/11/2016 17:36

Grace is very much nicer than Ivy.

ByAllMeansMoveAtAGlacialPace · 01/11/2016 17:38

Can we see a photo now Grin

oleoleoleole · 01/11/2016 17:42

Id say no, say it over and over. It sounds like Gray Samuels Gray.

Error404usernamenotfound · 01/11/2016 17:42

I came on here to defend the name Grace, as it's lovely, and not as over-used as it was a few years ago, but having seen your surname I'm really sorry, but aloud it sounds like "Grey, Samuel's Grey". I think Ivy is lovely though.

Error404usernamenotfound · 01/11/2016 17:43

cross-post, ole!

Babydontcry · 01/11/2016 17:46

I think it's lovely, although also like Scarlett and ivy Smile

AcrossthePond55 · 01/11/2016 17:47

Ooh! Love Scarlett Grace!

Hmm, here's the test.....

(tannoy squeal, voice comes on) "Dr Samuels-Grey, Dr Scarlett Samuels-Grey, please report to Cardiology".

(Deep voice speaks) "Oyez, oyez, Court is now in session, Please rise for the Honourable Justice Grace Samuels-Grey".

Yep, you're good!

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 01/11/2016 17:47

Is it weird for my heart to ache? At how much I love her?

You bugger, you actually made me well up with that post! Not weird, and prepare to feel like it for the rest of your life! I think all your choices are lovely; my favourite is Ivy. I remember choosing names - I think I only decided on DS's the day before he was due to be registered!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/11/2016 17:50

Eden, call her Grace, you can call the next one Ivy ! 😄
Many congratulations on your new baby girl. 🌺🌺🍾

maddiemookins16mum · 01/11/2016 17:51

I love it (but think Ivy is even better).

Justaboy · 01/11/2016 17:56

Loverly name sounds very feminine and impressive.

I vote yes!

Halloweensnake · 01/11/2016 17:57

Beautiful name x

Baylisiana · 01/11/2016 17:59

Grace, Scarlett and Ivy would all work I think, but the one that flows best with the surname to me is Ivy.

Ivy Samuels Grey ...(or the others).....and born on hallowe'en.....this girl is so cool already! Congrats OP.

AmeliaJack · 01/11/2016 17:59

Grace is a lovely name but I would be concerned about ending up Grace Gray too.

Almost all the people I know with double barrelled names are referred to casually by their first name and the second surname by other people.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/11/2016 18:06

Grace Grey sounds fine though.

Scarlett works well too. Tiny preference for Ivy but both lovely

AmeliaJack · 01/11/2016 18:19

Not in my accent Dame it sounds like Grays Gray.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/11/2016 18:21

Oh right, completely different in mineGrin

CocoaX · 01/11/2016 18:21

Congratulations on your new baby!

I love Scarlett Grace Samuels-Grey, that is a fabulous name. I don't think Grace Samuels Grey works so well. Ivy is okay.

laundryelf · 01/11/2016 18:22

Scarlett Grace sounds great with your surnames, then she can choose which name she prefers when older, if she wanted to change it. Ivy always makes me think of Ivy Tilsley ? From Corrie years ago, not a nice character.

And yes, it does feel like a physical pain sometimes, that overwhelming love you feel for your child, even now that mine are grumpy teenagers, still feel it occasionally like that. Enjoy, it goes so fast but it's brilliant.
