Hey. I'm trying to think of a name for my daughter. I want an elegant name. I've always thought that the name Alyssa was quite nice. What do you all think?

Angelique?

Oly5 · 01/11/2016 20:58

Love it

Skaarsgard · 01/11/2016 20:58

I think its a lovely elegant name.

TotalPerspectiveVortex · 01/11/2016 20:59

Makes me think of Alyssa Edwards, the drag queen, sorry. Blush in my defence I have been watching Ru Paul a lot lately.

Meltingrocks · 01/11/2016 21:02

I too think of Alyssa Edwards.

Lucked · 01/11/2016 21:04

I like it but I don't really think if elegant, it's too modern (in popularity) for me to have attached that connotation to. You don't really describe people in there teens and early twenties as elegant.

Alicia is incredibly elegant.

BadToTheBone · 01/11/2016 21:09

Lovely but not elegant, I know too many.

BellaShLex · 01/11/2016 21:10

Alyssa is a beautiful name!

IPityThePontipines · 01/11/2016 21:14

I also think of the epitome of glamour and grace that is Alyssa Edwards.

DramaAlpaca · 01/11/2016 21:17

It's pretty, but I wouldn't say it's elegant.

CrowyMcCrowFace · 01/11/2016 21:27

I like it, but have an Alicia with year group or class mates Alyssa, Elyssa, Elise, Alice, Alesha, Elisha, Ayesha & Aisha!

All of them endlessly mispronounced.

Most recently dd & her mate Abbie were confused by someone who congratulated Abbie's mum on 'Ablicia's excellent maths results' Grin.

Very similar to other popular current names - would this irritate you? (it's never bothered me).

Pipilangstrumpf · 01/11/2016 21:45

We all have different tastes, but I don't find Alyssa elegant at all, sorry

pensivepolly · 01/11/2016 21:53

Name and spelling too modern/not classic enough to be "elegant" IMHO

littlepeas · 01/11/2016 22:35

No, it's too modern. Classic names are the most elegant:

Charlotte
Eleanor
Alice
Elizabeth/Isabelle
Frances/Francesca
Philippa

Ultimately it will be the person who is elegant, notbtge name.

Kokosjumping · 01/11/2016 22:38

Not really sure how one can possibly define an "elegant" name.

But bit unfortunate to have a name specifically chosen to be elegant if said child ends up a great clumsy lummox like me

rainbow99 · 01/11/2016 22:39

I'm of the same opinion as Hodd too - sorry. Alice is lovely and sounds timeless and elegant

IpDipCatnip · 02/11/2016 07:43

Alicia comes across classy and elegant, Alyssa made up and fashionable IMO.

icantgetnosleep5 · 02/11/2016 09:46

It sounds more foreign than elegant to me.
Georgette, Georgina, Evangeline, Agnes type names seem more elegant to me 😊

icantgetnosleep5 · 02/11/2016 09:52

2nd Alice & Alexandra as more elegant sounding

AmysTiara · 02/11/2016 09:58

It's lovely and much prettier than Alice which sounds very twee. Jmo.

SpecialFlowSnake · 02/11/2016 15:49

IMO Alice is more elegant than Alyssa. And Alyssa and similar are becoming more popular as Crowy said above.

Perhaps Allegra?

GiveUmEll · 02/11/2016 16:14

Alyssa is quite modern and trendy. Maybe, Alissa or Alessia?

Shemozzle · 02/11/2016 19:34

Elegant is not what springs to mind for me at all.

I have a bit of a bugbear with this name as I know so many similar names. Adults and one child. Alyssa, Aleesa, Alessia, Aleisha, Alysha... Really hurts my brain. It is trendy and dated pop star sounding to me.

mathanxiety · 03/11/2016 06:21

No it's not.

It belongs in the same category as Brittany.

StreetFighter · 04/11/2016 18:46

It's a pretty name, but I wouldn't file it under 'elegant'.

Agree with PPs who suggested Francesca, and have you considered Naomi?
