Can we name our son Noah? :(

Noah is my favourite name (has been for years) and DH's!

Our surname is a profession (I suppose?) so it sounds like "know a..." :(

The thing is, both names are rarely said together!

Should we go for the name we love?

Elliott Noah Sailor. Sneak it in Wink

NoahVale · 27/10/2016 19:31

Elijah?

Ellieboolou27 · 27/10/2016 19:32

Was about to agree to Noah until you mentioned your surname, I defiantly think you should avoid, Elliot is nicer anyway

ButterBeanSoup · 27/10/2016 19:32

I think it's kinda awesome! Better than something bland.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 27/10/2016 19:33

Elliot Noah Sailor sounds fab

metaphoricus · 27/10/2016 19:42

It's very disappointing not to be able to use a name you love. We had to pass over one of my favourite girls' name because it was too close to DH's surname. (Think Lindsey Lindsay, Frances Francis, or similar). However, the child is going to have it for life - so it had to be sacrificed. A dear old friend of mine eventually married a man with the same surname as her Christian name, but as she was in her mid thirties she thought it amusing and had the option of not using it. (She did use it though!)
Unfortunately Noah Sailor might, to some, have some naughty connotations. (I have a penchant for stating the bleeding obvious)

metaphoricus · 27/10/2016 19:43

Elliott Noah Sailor. Sneak it in

That could be even worse.

stonygreysoil · 28/10/2016 08:35

sorry Noah S_ is a welcome mat for bullies

stonygreysoil · 28/10/2016 08:37

but Elliot sounds nice.

Was going to suggest Jonah.... but no..

MotherDuckSaid · 28/10/2016 09:07

I think Noah sailor sounds really kool! Besides when was th last time someone said ur full name ? 😊

Aliveinwanderland · 28/10/2016 09:12

We've just named DS Elliot and other names we liked were Miles, Milo and Theo.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 28/10/2016 09:16

Noah Sailor is fine. Really cool name. There are nautical references in both names. He won't be bullied - it's not like you're calling him Hairy Balls or something.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 28/10/2016 09:17

I think names like David Davis are far worse and there are plenty of those.

flightywoman · 28/10/2016 09:18

Oh goodness me! Have Noah if you want Noah! It's hardly Teresa Green or Dwayne Pipe is it...

If Bullies bully it's because they're bullies not because of a name.

Loafingaround · 28/10/2016 09:37

Elliot is lovely, and such a gorgeous surname too!

Loafingaround · 28/10/2016 09:38

I also think Noah Sailor is rather lovely. Far too much thought put into going with surnames, middle names etc etc, in reality really not an issue.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 28/10/2016 10:03

So many names are forgettable, or memorable for wrong reasons (Jenny Taylor etc). I would remember a Noah Sailor for being really cool.

stonygreysoil · 28/10/2016 10:08

all lovely in theory but when a boy is on the receiving end of homophobic chants of "Know a sailor?", it might feel a little less cool to the boy in question.

There's sticking to your guns and there's being silly.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 28/10/2016 10:08

I love the name Noah but I don't think you can use it with Sailor. He would get teased and even when an adult would have it pointed out to him by people as though he'd never worked it out for himself. I have an issue with my (very ordinary) surname in that I now live in a place of the same name and EVERY time I have to give my name and address out the recipient tells me that I live in the same place as my name. Like I haven't realised......

octoberfarm · 28/10/2016 13:18

I'm going against the trend here to say that I'd use Noah if I were you. I know there's the nautical theme but just ran this past my DH too, and we both think it's a lovely name that goes really well. At most people will think something of it, and then move on. I always find once people get to know the LO, they forget about stuff like that anyway. You love the name - go for it!

JasmineS88 · 28/10/2016 14:41

I think it's fine! Noah Sailor is a great name Smile but I do love Elliot!

Roygrace · 28/10/2016 14:51

Can someone explain to me what's wrong with Noah sailor?

JasmineS88 · 28/10/2016 14:53

Roygrace - the nautical theme... Also, it sounds like "know a sailor?" Smile

CauliflowerSqueeze · 28/10/2016 14:55

Because Noah had an ark and a sailor is on a boat apparently.

Milklollies · 28/10/2016 14:55

Why not give him a hyphen surname? I assume your husbands name is sailor? You can do noah your surname-sailor
