Sophia vs. Matilda

BlueLagoon2 · 24/10/2016 22:49

My DH and I are hesitating between Sophia and Matilda for our baby girl who is due by the end of November.
I like Matilda but dislike all the nicknames associated with it (although I like Millie... But this is not a common nickname for Matilda).
I also love Sophia but my husband thinks it is too popular.
What do you think?

Matilda! Love it.

Katelocks · 24/10/2016 22:54

Sophia is gorgeous.

rainbow99 · 24/10/2016 22:56

Absolutely love Sophia, seems much more feminine to me. Matilda feels a bit clunky and not pretty sounding like Sophia

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 24/10/2016 22:57

I like Matilda, and would call her that all the time, however, other people may not. She may also shorten it herself, as she gets older, who knows !
I do like Tilly though, but strangely, not Millie.
I also like Sophia, but not Soph.
Not being much help, am I.
I would go with Matilda, It's lovely.
I have a Harriet Matilda ❤️

Enidblyton1 · 24/10/2016 23:01

Both lovely, though I sadly agree with your DH about Sophia being very popular the moment. I know a lot of them, and with two different spellings (Sofia/Sophia), they are always getting misspelt.

I only know one Matilda, and she is known as Millie! She has always been introduced to everyone as Millie so nobody would call her anything else.

I'd definitely go for Matilda, known as Millie Smile

AmberNectarine · 24/10/2016 23:20

Sophia is more of a 'grown up' name. Matilda is always going to be synonymous with the little girl in the Roald Dahl story.

Lovely name for a little girl but I would worry how it would translate into adulthood.

FifaFater · 24/10/2016 23:21

May I suggest...

Mathia or Sophilda?

Seriously though, both are beautifull!!!!

Chinlo · 24/10/2016 23:22

I know more Matildas than Sophias from recent years (I know that's only anecdotal but still).

For me I would choose Sophia just because it's so beautiful and I have no real love for the name Matilda.

NameChanger22 · 24/10/2016 23:28

I really like both names, but I prefer Sophia.

Woodenmouse · 24/10/2016 23:30

I want a Matilda!!

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 25/10/2016 00:30

Matilda. My sister has a Matilda known mainly as Milly.

Pluto30 · 25/10/2016 00:57

I love both, but love Sophia more because I don't like any of the nicknames for Matilda except Mattie.

Also, I know more Matildas under the age of 10 than I do Sophias. But, statistically, Sophia is more popular.

Sophia is lovely

KoalaDownUnder · 25/10/2016 15:32

Sophia.

It has been overused, but it's just stunning. I find Matilda very clunky.

KoalaDownUnder · 25/10/2016 15:33

Or what about Minerva or Miranda?

Foxtato · 25/10/2016 19:27

Matilda! I think it's prettier than Sophia.

Nonameyet1 · 25/10/2016 20:48

I like Matilda the best. I heard one with a nn of Tilda which I thought was lovely.

daisydalrymple · 25/10/2016 20:52

Sophia - it's such a beautiful name. Dd's middle name is sofia, so I am biased (spelling due to looking better with Welsh first name, but would have chosen Sophia spelling for first name)

Niece is called Matilda, she gets called tilda.

BarInSpace · 25/10/2016 22:36

Sophia

PterodactylToenails · 25/10/2016 22:40

I don't like the name Sophia I think it is boring...sorry. I like Matilda with Tilly or Tilda as NN. I associate Milly/Millie with Amelia/ Millicent

alltouchedout · 25/10/2016 22:41

Sophia. If ds3 had been a dd he would have been Sofia.

hoddtastic · 26/10/2016 00:05

both quite common- i personally know of 5 (off top of head) aged 8 and under.

Coey2016 · 26/10/2016 05:47

I like them both, again they are very popular where I am. I'm not Such a fan of Tilly as a nickname and think Milly is a nice alternative.

llangennith · 26/10/2016 06:24

Matilda can also be shortened to Mattie.
