Slate me if you will !

I thought we'd settled on the name Thomas.. But have had mixed reactions to it, one even said it was a chimney sweeps name! 😂 And then a relative scoffed and said I may as well go the whole hog and name him Tarquin.
So I was wondering if you lovely mumsnetters could give me your opinions on the name, whatever that may be 😊

Classic. Classless.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 21/10/2016 11:45

Timeless and classic. No class issues at any end of the scale. Lovely.

SoggyWetFlannel · 21/10/2016 11:46

Timeless, so classless surely?

SmallBee · 21/10/2016 11:46

I think names like this, which are classic, don't really have a class.

buckyou · 21/10/2016 11:48

Chimney sweep name!? Wtf??

Thomas is lovely. Good strong name.

Bert is a chimney sweep name.nothing wrong with that though! Thomas is classic and classless and a great name.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 21/10/2016 11:50

Agree - timeless, classless and classic. Like it a lot.
Chimney sweep's name Hmm (mind you, the accusation of Tarquin-esqueness is almost as odd)

I know a few Thomas's, ranging from a University Professor to a Teacher to an Apprentice Engineer to someone who is currently out of work. Some of them use Tom as a nn , one used Tommy as a child
So I would say Thomas is one of those names that works at all levels I really like the name.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/10/2016 11:52

Classic. Suits anyone of any class.

SirChenjin · 21/10/2016 11:52

No particular class - it's a (lovely) timeless, classic name

Thomas is about a classless and timeless a name as you can get. I like it a lot but dh wouldn't agree to use it for any of our sons as he once knew and hated someone with that name. Sigh.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/10/2016 12:01

Chimney sweep name!? Wtf??

Well, Tom is the name of the chimney sweep in The Water Babies - not sure if this classic children's book is much read nowadays and I rather doubt that it would be many people's first association with the name! Grin and in any case he ' becomes "a great man of science" who "can plan railways, and steam-engines, and electric telegraphs, and rifled guns, and so forth". '

It's a nice, entirely unobjectionable classless name.

rainbow99 · 21/10/2016 12:24

Thomas is classic and timeless. Chimney sweep Confused

everythingis · 21/10/2016 12:29

I think it's dated. It's like Henry - inoffensive but very middle class

CocktailQueen · 21/10/2016 12:30

Classic and timeless! No particular class.

jaykay34 · 21/10/2016 12:33

As others have said, I think it fits any class. There are a lot of Thomas's and Toms about from all walks of life.

I also think it's timeless and not related to any particular era. It's never really gone out of fashion - it's a great name.

ftw · 21/10/2016 12:33

If you want to signify class, hyphenate it.

Thomas-Kai
Thomas-Rupert

according to your actual class. Wink

WankersHacksandThieves · 21/10/2016 12:34

I'd say it's probably smack in the middle and mostly used by the middle classes but equally is not out of place in any playground from the most deprived to the most privileged. I'd put it in the same group as John, Alexander, Samuel, Benjamin etc

moglovespumpkins · 21/10/2016 12:35

It's a lovely name. Who cares what other people think anyway.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 21/10/2016 12:37

Great name, classic, timeless.

ageingrunner · 21/10/2016 12:38

Thomas the tank belongs to the E2 class, apparently, the name Thomas itself is classless and a great name though

BikeRunSki · 21/10/2016 12:38

Classic, classless, timeless.
