I thought we'd settled on the name Thomas.. But have had mixed reactions to it, one even said it was a chimney sweeps name! 😂 And then a relative scoffed and said I may as well go the whole hog and name him Tarquin.
So I was wondering if you lovely mumsnetters could give me your opinions on the name, whatever that may be 😊

I know a few Thomas's, ranging from a University Professor to a Teacher to an Apprentice Engineer to someone who is currently out of work. Some of them use Tom as a nn , one used Tommy as a child
So I would say Thomas is one of those names that works at all levels I really like the name.

Thomas is about a classless and timeless a name as you can get. I like it a lot but dh wouldn't agree to use it for any of our sons as he once knew and hated someone with that name. Sigh.

Well, Tom is the name of the chimney sweep in The Water Babies - not sure if this classic children's book is much read nowadays and I rather doubt that it would be many people's first association with the name! and in any case he ' becomes "a great man of science" who "can plan railways, and steam-engines, and electric telegraphs, and rifled guns, and so forth". '

It's a nice, entirely unobjectionable classless name.

As others have said, I think it fits any class. There are a lot of Thomas's and Toms about from all walks of life.

I also think it's timeless and not related to any particular era. It's never really gone out of fashion - it's a great name.

If you want to signify class, hyphenate it.

I'd say it's probably smack in the middle and mostly used by the middle classes but equally is not out of place in any playground from the most deprived to the most privileged. I'd put it in the same group as John, Alexander, Samuel, Benjamin etc

It's a lovely name. Who cares what other people think anyway.

Thomas the tank belongs to the E2 class, apparently, the name Thomas itself is classless and a great name though
