Slate me if you will !

I thought we'd settled on the name Thomas.. But have had mixed reactions to it, one even said it was a chimney sweeps name! 😂 And then a relative scoffed and said I may as well go the whole hog and name him Tarquin.
So I was wondering if you lovely mumsnetters could give me your opinions on the name, whatever that may be 😊

Thomas is just a generic, inoffensive name - it doesn't have a class.

OhFuds · 21/10/2016 12:44

I like Thomas and would've used it if I knew people wouldn't shorten it to Tam, which is the norm in my area once you get to teenage age.

vghifcqueen · 21/10/2016 13:12

Completely timeless, classless and ageless. A lovely classic name which suits anyone.

Ilovewillow · 21/10/2016 13:16

classic and timeless!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 21/10/2016 13:20

I have a Thomas - although he's only ever been called Tom.

Other Thomas/Tom/Tommy's we've met across the years have come from probably every class category you could think of.

Likewise Matthew, James & Daniel amongst others.

Chinlo · 21/10/2016 13:35

I have two close friends from school called Thomas (both Tom). One left school at 16 and works as an electrician, the other has a masters degree and has some high-flying job in commercial property development.

BarInSpace · 21/10/2016 13:43

It's a classic Biblical name.

Terrifiedandregretful · 21/10/2016 15:30

I think it squarely middle class at the moment, but not unknown at either end of the scale.

strawberrypenguin · 21/10/2016 15:33

Classic and classless

Footle · 21/10/2016 15:35

Thomas is a great name Our chimney sweep is called Andrew. HTH.

viques · 21/10/2016 15:39

Thomas is a great classless name. If you wanted to class up (and appear a tad arsey )you could insist on Thom with an h for a diminutive.......

DiegeticMuch · 21/10/2016 16:30

It's a timeless classic. Lovely name.

ArialAnna · 21/10/2016 16:42

Agree with others here, it's classic - neither chavvy or overly posh. I'm surprised that anyone objects strongly to it!

Spudlet · 21/10/2016 16:47

It cost £50 to get our chimney swept and that was mates rates. Your dc could do a lot worse than taking it up as a trade!

Smartleatherbag · 21/10/2016 16:48

Thomas is a classic, an excellent choice.

TheNaze73 · 21/10/2016 16:52

Classic name, that never dates. Certainly not a chimney sweep name, whoever said that must be on the sniff.

Artandco · 21/10/2016 16:52

I think it's a classic, doesn't really age and works in any country or job. If that's what you like, go with it.

Our eldest is Conrad. It was one that worked with Dh and I different languages and cultures, and again I thought didn't age or seem terrible for baby, child or adult.

My mother still almost 7 years on tries her best not to use it as it's ' like being called Hitler'. Wtf

Artandco · 21/10/2016 16:53

Spud - your right there, it's often over £100 in London to get chimney swept. We should start sending the kids back up there

GoofyTheHero · 21/10/2016 16:55

*Yes I don't get why Tarquin gets dragged out.

Has anyone ever met a little boy with this name?*

Yes!

SansasEscape · 22/10/2016 00:10

I think Tom is one of the few names that is actually truly classless.

MotherDuckSaid · 22/10/2016 11:01

Ftw- really giggled at your suggestion to hyphenate depending upon class 😂

And i like the nickname Thom when written 😁

Thanks all for ur opinions, he's due any time now so I think he may well be a Thomas after all X

Yep, agree. Classic and timeless. It's nothing like Tarquin.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/10/2016 12:30

I suppose Tom Kitten did get a bit sooty... Grin

Good choice.

Pemba · 23/10/2016 00:46

Classless really, and classic. Nice, although there are quite a few around as I'm sure you know.

Not completely timeless though. I was born in the 60s and wasn't at school with a single Thomas (they were all Mark, David, Andrew, Stephen etc.)

I think it started coming back gradually in the 70s, as I had a cousin Thomas born at this time. Same thing with William and Henry/Harry.
