Ana?

She is already this to me in my head - for some reason I just prefer the Spanish spelling Ana rather than Anna (it does have meaning to us). I know that she will probably having people assume it's spelt Anna, but I don't think that's the end of the world.

Your thoughts please?

It's a shortening of anorexia, which was my first thought, sorry

DoItTooJulia · 15/10/2016 14:07

It's a pronunciation issue.

Ana= ar-na
Anna = ah-na

Or would you pronounce it like Anna?

PotatoBread · 15/10/2016 14:08

I wouldn't get the anorexia connection if I met someone called Ana. I like it

MadisonAvenue · 15/10/2016 14:09

I really like it!

CanandWill · 15/10/2016 14:10

Love it

SallyR0se · 15/10/2016 14:10

Agree about pronunciation.

In Frozen Anna is said On-ah, the American way. I imagine Ana might be said similar.
Though where I come from A is a long vowel so it's Aah-na.

Soubriquet · 15/10/2016 14:11

I do like it but I would worry everyone would misspell it

I've grown up with a misspelt name and I got no end of spellings and pronounciations

Chinlo · 15/10/2016 14:11

I prefer the Latin spelling too and would pronounce it the same as Anna.

However, it is usually used as part of a double first name, such as Ana Clara, Ana Luisa, Ana Carolina, etc. so to me it looks a little strange as JUST Ana.

UnoriginalNN · 15/10/2016 14:11

I did see that when I searched it on here stealth, but I'd not seen it before. Hmmm.

Re: pronunciation, I really like both, though where I am (mids) everyone will just call her ah-na regardless

It is quite easy to just say "Ana with one N" though.

PoppyPicklesPenguin · 15/10/2016 14:13

Ana has very negative connotations, especially the Pro-Ana websites which encourage girls to follow anorexica as a lifestyle choice

UnoriginalNN · 15/10/2016 14:13

This is why I love the baby name board - I LOVE the cross examining of a name from every angle Grin

As a single name it looks lonely. Anna is more complete as a name. Ana for me needs to be doubled with Clara, Maria, Luisa etc.
I love the name Ana-Clara.
I don't think anyone would say O-na in the USA, I think it is said that way in Frozen to sound Scandanavian.

dovesong · 15/10/2016 14:30

I've seen the pro-ana thing before but wouldn't immediately associate it if I saw the name Ana. I think it's very very pretty.

Sophronia · 15/10/2016 14:32

I much prefer Anna

Soubriquet · 15/10/2016 14:33

I wouldn't have known about the pro-ana thing either

PoldarksBreeches · 15/10/2016 14:43

Really - unless you're Spanish, the Ana spelling looks a bit unnecessary.

UnoriginalNN · 15/10/2016 15:31

I did wonder if it would Poldark

I couldn't use Ana-Clara, as lovely as it is, as my DD is Lara Smile

As I always say on threads like this, life can be difficult enough- why do something that will make your child's life more difficult- even if it's just a tiny bit more difficult? Having to say "Anna but with one n' every single time for 80 years will be more tedious than you can imagine. And it's not as if people will get it right 50% of the time like Ann and Anne- they will get it wrong every time

DakotaFanny · 15/10/2016 15:42

Just go with Anna. It's a beautiful, uncomplicated name! I've never met one who wasn't simply lovely either!

ReallyReallyReally · 15/10/2016 15:46

I like Ana. Could you have Anastasia nn Ana?

UnoriginalNN · 15/10/2016 15:50

Would Anastasia be too much do you think?

Bert I guess that's why I asked, to see how many people would say "just use Anna ffs" Grin

I think people will get used to the Ana spelling. I have lived in Spain and almost used Ana-Belen for dd. I was a bit worried Belen would sound like bellend to British ears.

Anna or Ana is beautiful.

paddypants13 · 15/10/2016 15:54

Just seen your update. Anastasia is also lovely and not too much at all.

BertrandRussell · 15/10/2016 15:56

"I think people will get used to the Ana spelling."

Well of course they will. Once she has told them. Every time she meets a new person. For 80 years.
