Ana?

She is already this to me in my head - for some reason I just prefer the Spanish spelling Ana rather than Anna (it does have meaning to us). I know that she will probably having people assume it's spelt Anna, but I don't think that's the end of the world.

Your thoughts please?

I have a name that's very common amongst my peers and I still have to spell it to people.

I've been doing it for 30 plus years and survived.

UnoriginalNN · 15/10/2016 18:20

Well Anastasia just got well and truly vetoed by DH with a resounding "No" Grin

It is so against my usual naming philosophy to deliberately spell a common name differently, but I do bloody love Ana.

Like paddypants, my name was a very popular one in the late 60s/70s and it's not difficult to spell by any stretch of the imagination but people (of all ages) often get it wrong.

PotatoBread · 15/10/2016 18:55

I don't think the spelling issue would be that much different than for the likes of Clare/Claire or Sarah/Sara - no big deal saying Ana with one n

crapfatbanana · 15/10/2016 19:05

My DD has a friend called Ana (long A sound) and as far as I know nobody has ever made the anorexia connection. I love the name.

UnoriginalNN · 16/10/2016 15:45

I think I'm going to use it!

Its nice. But...don't choose a middle name starting with an LGrin

UnoriginalNN · 16/10/2016 16:23

errol Grin I had thought of that...
Ana Louise is not an option!

It's a lovely name op

CruCru · 16/10/2016 16:30

Please bear in mind that Ana is the name of the girl from Fifty Shades of Grey.

UnoriginalNN · 16/10/2016 16:44

I had thought of that too Cru but I don't mind too much - hopefully it will fade into the abyss eventually!

Possibly outing but I'm an Ana. I love my name but am forever spelling it.

legotits · 16/10/2016 16:47

The risk of a school life full of Anal jokes would put me off.

Anna would be my preference.

CheerfullyIndifferent · 16/10/2016 16:51

(Though, to be honest, unless it's something official, I just let people spell it however they like these days.)

UnoriginalNN · 16/10/2016 16:51

But surely the anal jokes are just as common with Anna? My friend loved the name Annaliese (sp?) for her DD, but then decided it looked too much like Anal-ease (go figure).

Cheerfully does it bother you to the point where you wish you were Anna? Not sure what to do again!

If you are likely to be in the Uk it will make life much easier for DD to use Anna rather than Ana. I have to spell my name and it does get tedious particularly regarding beaurocracy such as banks, gas company. I suppose that will be less of an issue as things are done more online. You might want to try a. couple of spell checks to see if it autocorrects Ana to Anna.

legotits · 16/10/2016 16:57

Anil at my DS school was constantly having his book bag and peg vandalised into Anal.

I'm not sure why but it really stuck with me.

CheerfullyIndifferent · 16/10/2016 17:00

No, it doesn't bother me at all but I moved here as an adult - in my home country, the single n spelling is the most common one, I was still asked occasionally to spell it though. It's a short enough name that I can just say A-N-A and be over with in 2 seconds. My daughter also has a spellable name (lol), it doesn't seem to bother her either, she's 7.

BertrandRussell · 16/10/2016 17:05

my dp has a last name that can be changed with one slight stroke of the pen to something rude -and and was at school and university.
And even now in adult life it happens.

Ana is just too tempting. Please don't. As I said, why do something that would make your child's life even a tiny bit more difficult when you don't have to? A lifetime of spelling it out and a childhood full of "hilarious" graffiti for the sake of an "n"......

TyrionLannisterforKing · 16/10/2016 17:22

Another Ana (something) here. My situation is different because that is the usual spelling here, so the only times I have to say "Ana with one N" are when I am abroad. It would not matter to me if I were Anna (having to say two Ns every time it is spelt by someone else). I am quite impartial to spelling, because my surname is Italian and I have to spell it EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Double names with Ana I know:
Ana-Lucia
Ana-Carolina
Ana-Laura
Ana-Clara
And more I cannot think of right now. Anastasia is beautiful, but I cannot help but frown at the "oh, like in 50 shades?" that people seem to associate when I introduce myself as Ana.

Oh, and about pronunciation, it is roughly the same as Anna. The only difference is that the A in my language, combined with N, has a different sound. The closest I can get without using accents is Hmm-na. I do not mind the mispronunciation, and have found myself pronuncing it the English way when speaking, uhh, English.
