Waterman, Smallwater or Smallhouse?

My surname is Waterhouse; DP's is Smallman... We are getting married soon. We're also expecting! Which new surname would you use? I think Smallwater sounds the best?

Err because that's what I think.

BunnyBunnyMooseMoose · 08/10/2016 20:09

I love the idea OP, and Waterman sounds great! Smile

AnnabelleZippy · 08/10/2016 20:10

Cant, what is the reason for taking your DP's though?

raviolidreaming · 08/10/2016 20:10

I think it's a fine idea - no more or less 'odd' than double barrelling - and vote for Waterman or Houseman.

Also, what happens if you get divorced or split up Keep the name? Go back to maiden name? It will be no more complicated than if the OP had taken her DH's name.

CJKnox · 08/10/2016 20:15

To be honest, surely if you separated having taken DP's name it would be harder, Cant?? As we have both given up part of our name and taken a bit, it feels like that's always going to be fine, as after all it's half and half, like our child is... I just feel like I'd be comfortable keeping Smallwater, Waterman, or whatever than keeping Smallman... if we ever broke up

OP posts:
GooseFriend · 08/10/2016 20:15

The divorce argument is BS, what happens when people get divorced is varied and personal and the name element would be a) insignificant in the context and b) also an issue if you changed your name originally or double barrelled as you have to work out whether to stick or change

Back to the thread ... Waterhouse

CJKnox · 08/10/2016 20:16

Goose, Waterhouse is my name atm GrinGrin

I like Manwater. Smallwater is awesome :)!!!
And waterman is also pretty cool.

Just don't go with Smallman. Your names are hilariously awesome, btw :)!! Mine used to be so boring (Meier, before getting married)

WeArePregnant11 · 08/10/2016 20:43

I also like Waterhouse, btw.

CantThinkOfAQuirkyName · 08/10/2016 21:10

But if you split at least you can both go back to your "roots".

Your DC 'traditionally' would take your dh surname.

You're getting married which is 'traditional'

Why not take his name?

CJKnox · 08/10/2016 21:11

Because tradition isn't always a good thing? Confused

OP posts:
squoosh · 08/10/2016 21:12

Marriage is more than just a tradition. Whereas taking a man's name is just a tradition. For many an outmoded one.

Why are some people so eager for the OP to take her partner's name? That is not the purpose of her thread.

CJKnox · 08/10/2016 21:13

Also, if we split, and I had taken his name, it would mean I'd need to change my child's name, as quite frankly, I wouldn't ever have a different surname to my child.

CJKnox · 08/10/2016 21:14

Thank you squoosh

CantThinkOfAQuirkyName · 08/10/2016 21:18

Why get married then?

milkyface · 08/10/2016 21:19

You know op could change her name back anyway? You can change your name to anything you want you know?

God if she doesn't want her husbands surname, she doesn't have to take it.

Stop questioning ops perfectly reasonable (and I think quite bloody good actually) decision.

Waterman or houseman I think!

milkyface · 08/10/2016 21:20

Why get married then?

Seriously? Marriage is about more than a name

squoosh · 08/10/2016 21:21

Cant are you saying the only point of marriage is for a woman to change her name? Christ on a bike.

It's 2016 love., Deal with it.

WeArePregnant11 · 08/10/2016 21:23

I think your idea is awesome and lovely. I'm not sure why some people are so upset by this. I kind of wish I had thought of this, tbh :/

I vote for Smallwater :)!! or Waterhouse!! And congrats on getting married Flowers

CantThinkOfAQuirkyName · 08/10/2016 21:24

No im not saying it's just about a surname.

But why make a name up?

I don't see the point.

Both adults have surnames and a family and a history.

What's wrong with having one of those names? Because you don't like it isn't a reason for me.

That's your name

Bollyroo · 08/10/2016 21:25

Op, DH and I amalgamated our surnames and it was the best decision for us. Having grown up lumbered with a double barrelled surname (plus 3 first names), I can safely recommend to anyone that shorter is better.

Do it! Congratulations!

squoosh · 08/10/2016 21:26

Because they both want a new family name!

Do you often have this much difficulty understanding things? People do things differently to you. How mindblowing!

milkyface · 08/10/2016 21:27

Fwiw I think Smallman Waterhouse sounds like a firm of solicitors and I wouldn't go for it either!

slightlyglitterbrained · 08/10/2016 21:27

Gosh, a zombie thread from the 50s! PMSL at the horror expressed by some posters.

Adding my +1 for Waterman, and agree you've got excellent surnames for the purpose. DP and I couldn't come up with a suitable mashup for DS (surnames from different countries), so we stuck with the default - my surname. Baby Glittersurname is what they put on his wristband in hospital, so he's always been that.

squoosh · 08/10/2016 21:27

Because you don't like it isn't a reason for me.

Er, she doesn't need a reason for you. Confused
