I can't tell if it would be silly? I see it suiting all ages!

I have 2 children, who have very classical names, so not sure if it would 'go' anyway.

I loved Ptolemy before I was on mumsnet. There was a TV presenter with the name and I loved it then. I just asked DS and he won't let me change his name, how mean.

I don't think Wendy is due a revival yet, I think of it along the same lines as Sharon, Darren, Kevin, Claire, Wayne. They'll probably come back when our kids have kids and we'll be on Gransnet moaning about the hideous names being inflicted on our grandchildren.

juneau · 05/10/2016 09:59

True vivian. My grandma was called Lilian and she HATED her name, yet I know a couple of little Lilians now.

juneau · 05/10/2016 09:59

Sorry, vixen, not vivian!

ooonatoffolo · 05/10/2016 09:59

I loved Ptolemy too.
Ptolemy Dean did a programme called: Restoration some years back. (about 12/13 years?_)
He was fab.
Very nearly called ds Ptolemy (Tolly for short). H vetoed it.

ooonatoffolo · 05/10/2016 10:01

Just googled him and see he grew up in my old village, and went to my old Uni. Born same year. Spooky. Seeing as his Dad was a judge and mine a printer I don't suppose we met socially. I'd have remembered his name.

Simmi1 · 05/10/2016 10:02

No to Wendy it's dreadful!
Cindy is ok though although not great

MitzyLeFrouf · 05/10/2016 11:00

I loved the restoration programmes. Ptolemy Dean's sisters are called Tacita and Antigony.

MitzyLeFrouf · 05/10/2016 11:01

No, if child grows up to have a very important position in life her name will either help or hinder. I have never heard of a HRH Wendy or even Dame Wendy.

I don't particularly like the name Wendy but I know two, one is a solicitor and one is the head of a press and PR at quite a high profile arts organisation.

MitzyLeFrouf · 05/10/2016 11:02

And have you never heard of Dame Wendy Hillier? Great actress.

Opinions on Wendy, please?
awkward91 · 05/10/2016 11:09

All of the Wendys I know are lovely, however I see it as a name for a woman over 40 and don't really see it suiting a child in this day and age.

I think it sounds like a 1970s comic - Bunty, Jinty, Judy, Wendy....

i actually really like it , it was a created name for Peter Pan, as the author had been referred to as a 'fwendy' growing up. I like names with a story, and i think this one is due a come back :)

QueenLizIII · 05/10/2016 21:05

It is no worse that Mabel, Mildred and all the granny names making a comeback. But it is a granny name.

Longlost10 · 05/10/2016 21:08

true, but it is also a much older name that the author was not aware of, short for Gwendolyn

Empress13 · 05/10/2016 21:12

Might get changed to Windy when she goes to school - kids can be cruel.

FWIW I don't like it keep thinking of Wendy Craig - dull and beige

spankhurst · 05/10/2016 21:18

I don't like it, it's frumpy. I like Wendy Craig though, Butterflies was genius!Grin

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 06/10/2016 17:20

Nothing wrong with sounding a like a 1970's comic Wink

JosephineMaynard · 06/10/2016 17:32

Mumsnet has ruined the name Wendy for me. As per the link in the 2nd reply.

But objectively there isn't anything wrong with it.

It's not a name I perceive as being tied to any particular decade - I don't think it's ever been popular enough for that - so not a name I'd regard as too dated for a baby now.

Kenworthington · 06/10/2016 17:32

My 77 year old mother is called wendy

Dontrocktheboat · 06/10/2016 18:57

It's definitely a middle aged woman name and doesn't even have a nice sound (wend?). I know a Wendy and her partner always calls her 'Wen' which makes me think of some sort of facial lesion!

buttercup54321 · 06/10/2016 19:28

My supervisor is Wendy and she can be a cow. Lol

IM NOT IN MY 40'S AND I DO NOT WEAR A LOT OF BEIGE!

But for the love of god don't give your DD the name Wendy. Never liked it. I was named after the Beach Boys song so the only saving grace is that I wasn't named Rhonda or Barbara-Ann!

There's so many great names out there. Wendy isn't one of them.
