What do you think of Mireya (pronounced Mir-RAY-ah) as a girl's first name?

It's pretty but unfortunately similar to Mirena (the coil). Is it a "real name"?

user1474882999 · 26/09/2016 10:51

Yes it's a Spanish name - it means miracle. Haha that was exactly what I was wondering re Mirena!!!

TBH it looks like a misspelling of Mariah.

LessonsLearned · 26/09/2016 10:53

I thought the Spanish for miracle was "milagro"?

anotherdayanothersquabble · 26/09/2016 10:54

Mirena..

user1474882999 · 26/09/2016 10:55

Yes milagro also means miracle

I also really like Mireille (Mee-ray) which is the French version but worried that people won't know how to pronounce it in the UK!

Brokenbiscuits86 · 26/09/2016 10:56

I'm sorry but when I saw the title I read it as Mirena!

user1474882999 · 26/09/2016 10:57

Don't be sorry, I asked for precisely that reason as wanted to see if others would think that!

EssentialHummus · 26/09/2016 11:04

I think I'd go with the French version if you're dead set on this meaning.

legfaced · 26/09/2016 11:05

Sounds like a contraceptive.

ayeokthen · 26/09/2016 11:06

The coil was the first thing I thought of when I saw it, sorry.

user1474882999 · 26/09/2016 11:08

Not dead set on the meaning at all, just trying to play around with ideas...

Mireille is lovely. The Basque spelling; Mirai may help with pn concerns?

user1474882999 · 26/09/2016 11:33

Thanks that's helpful re the spelling of Mireille/Mirai...

OP posts:
RiverTam · 26/09/2016 11:45

I thought Mirena too, sorry!

everdene · 26/09/2016 12:05

I also love the name Mireille (and have to agree Mireya reminded me of the coil!).

Lots of people might initially mispronounce it or ask how it's pronounced but they'd only need to be told once and from then on it'd be straightforward (same with lots of unusual/foreign names I guess!)

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 26/09/2016 14:30

Sounds like a tablet or contraceptive.
How about
Mia. it means wished for child

AmeliaJack · 26/09/2016 14:38

The only thing is, I don't think the population in general are aware of "Mirena Coil".

I wasn't until I got one in my late thirties, I'm pretty sure my DH couldn't tell you my coil
is a ""Mirena" coil and my parents certainly wouldn't.

I think it's a pretty name and not that much of an issue. You'll be pleased to hear my iPhone has autocorrected Mirena to Mireya every time!

user1474882999 · 26/09/2016 16:08

What about Mariella or Ariana?

OP posts:
viques · 26/09/2016 16:12

Please not Mireille. The most evil teacher ever known. The day she resigned the word went around the playground and staff room like wildfire and the entire area was illuminated by smiles......... Sorry, personal feelings getting in the way of reasoned argument there.

DavidPuddy · 26/09/2016 19:12

Or Mirja or Milena?

DavidPuddy · 26/09/2016 19:14

Mirja is a German name, so you would pronounce the j more like a y.

But actually I like Mireya.

hollyisalovelyname · 26/09/2016 19:19

I thought of Mirena too straight away.

Cynara · 26/09/2016 19:33

Maybe not Milena. Looks nice written down but said aloud is like melaena - the black, tarry stools associated with gastric bleeding. Bit niche, but medical professionals will hear it and shudder.
