Can anyone help me with name regret and possible nicknames?

I have a lovely 2 year old called Clara. I have never been quite happy with her name, in fact I am getting less content with it as time goes on. If I could find a nice nickname/shortening for her, I think that would help - any ideas? Thank you!

Carrie is close enough to Clara if you ask me. My brother was known as a completely different name all his life thanks to nicknames...even his teachers called it him...imagine he was Christened John but called Roger....the names were that dissimilar!

Do you pronounce it Clah ra or clare ra?

bringbackfonzi · 21/09/2016 20:59

Clah-ra.

You'll probably have to put up with the fact that other people will call her Clara! Call her whatever feels natural to you! I had a little bit of name regret for a few months after DD was born, I'd always call her a soppy nn when talking to her (like fruit loop Grin) and refer to her as "my little girl" or "the baby"

It's only been recently that I've started being more comfortable with her name from yelling it at her when she's pulling books off the bookshelf

Basically my very long-winded point is that calling her Clalala is fine for now! And even if you did "pick" a nn, the chances of everyone using it would be very unlikely!

skyyequake · 22/09/2016 16:03

(Although you could call her Raa Raa after the noisy little lion Grin)

lemonymelanie · 24/09/2016 15:32

If you already call her Clalala, why not shorten that to Lala? It's pretty.

Meadows76 · 24/09/2016 15:45

If you already call her Clalala, why not shorten that to Lala? It's pretty. please don't. She would earn herself the nickname teletubbie. Seriously!!

Meadows76 · 24/09/2016 15:47

She will probably have very definite views herself- I would be surprised if you could get away with changing it now!. I agree with this. In fact I am surprised so many people think it's ok just to change a child's name to suit the parents fickle side. It is your child's identity, please don't take it away.

Clara is a lovely name which sadly I couldn't use because if our surname.

I also love Coco (if we'd named DD Claudia she would have been coco).

I was in the same situation with DD...she has a NN which suits her much better, but I don't like nearly so much as a name.

I'd go with coco if it suits her.

I have to say how refreshing to hear a traditional nice name. I'm a teacher and I'm sick to death of Amber, Cally-Mae, made up ghetto names like La-Shaun and anything with -Leigh .... Yuck!!

You have chosen a beautiful dignified name for your daughter. Enjoy watching her grow into it xx

I love when babies are called CeCe which in your case wouldn't be much of a stretch .Im sorry you don't like the name Clara anymore .Though it's lovely.

DailyMailPenisPieces · 27/09/2016 04:58

Laurie?

Dreamer100 · 27/09/2016 08:39

Gosh, I adore Clara. Sweet on a little one, elegant on an adult. Don't regret it, it's really beautiful.

rhiaaaaaaaannon · 27/09/2016 08:41

I think I'd go for Cally or something similar

hehehehehehea · 07/07/2020 17:07

my name is clara and i always thought it wasnt special like my siblings but my little cousin calls me "kiki" which sound like "cc" in a way. i am starting to go by that now and i hope this helps!

bridgetreilly · 07/07/2020 17:26

RaRa.

Clarrie is always and only Clarrie Grundy from the Archers so I would avoid that like the plague.

@bringbackfonzi would love an update if you're still on here

bringbackfonzi · 07/07/2020 19:09

Hello, yes, my Clara is 6 now. She has ended up with a number of nicknames, Clarrie being one of them. But mostly she's called Clara, which I have grown to really love now. Hope for others with name regret maybe?

Cool! Thanks for letting us know, OP!

Whatsyourflava · 08/07/2020 16:31

@bringbackfonzi really appreciate you updating us. ❤️So glad you have grown to love the name! Not surprised - it's a lovely choice. Wish it were my name tbh.

17caterpillars1mouse · 08/07/2020 17:49

I like Clary

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 08/07/2020 17:55

@Geegee4 I have a Carys as well. Her 3 yr old brother thought it would be funny to call her Cabbage which morphed through Cabbage Patch to Patch. She is 18 and still gets called Patch by her siblings.

zingally · 10/07/2020 12:39

Nicknames can really from anywhere - they don't have to be related to the actual name.

I have a friend with a son - Finley. Whom everyone calls Mags.
My BIL is called Howard, but everyone calls him Dex.
