Any thoughts? yay or nay?

My niece is convinced Sidney is a girls name but thats because she's 13 and it's become a trendy girls name apparently. First I've heard of that.

I don't like it, but I don't think it's particularly feminine.

Having said that, the only Sidney I've known is a girl. She'd be 25 now.

He'll get Sid for short, definitely. Just make sure you're okay with that. The Sidney we knew got Sid or Cindy as nicknames. Sid is very... 2000 Olympics mascot.

BlueKarou · 18/09/2016 10:02

I love it for either sex. I grew up with a female cat called Sydney, named after Sid James.

BettyCrystal · 18/09/2016 10:05

I think Sydney might be a girls name in the realm of Madison or Chanel. A bit Footballers Wives to my mind...

SimplyNigella · 18/09/2016 10:06

I really like it, a little Sidney has just started at DS's nursery and it suits him.

strandedabroad · 18/09/2016 10:16

I know a little boy called Sydney. He's nearly 1. Lovely boy!

thestarryeyedsurprise · 18/09/2016 10:17

I love it!

Middleoftheroad · 18/09/2016 10:18

I like it. DH grandad was a Sidney. I think it's Sydney for girls, but always think of it as a male name - Sidney Poitier, Sid James etc.

PointlessUsername · 18/09/2016 10:20

I like it.

whoopiedoo · 18/09/2016 11:42

Thanks peeps. How about Violet for a girl?

Sidney was on our boys list. I love it.

Violet was also on our list, we ended up calling her Florence.

Great names OP Smile

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 18/09/2016 11:46

Sidney for a boy is great. Or Stanley.

But be prepared for people to ask if you named him after Sid Vicious. Continuously.

Love Violet for a girl.

Batteriesallgone · 18/09/2016 11:47

Sidney and Violet. Both great names! Smile

Batteriesallgone · 18/09/2016 11:47

Ooh yes I like Sidney but I love Stanley

whoopiedoo · 18/09/2016 11:58

Stanley was also on our list but seems to be up there on the trendy list now. I'm not worried about having a popular name but would prefer not to have a trendy one if that makes sense.

We love Florence too!

Love Sidney for a boy. Sid is really cute.

ZaZathecat · 18/09/2016 12:16

Sydney and Violet were both grandparents/great Uncles and Aunts of mine, so I offer you in the same vein: Annie, George, Doreen, Richard, Herbert, Christine, Frances.

I know siblings (11 and 8) called Sidney and Violet. Sidney is a boy and invariably called Sid. I love both names.

Honeybee79 · 18/09/2016 12:22

I have a 5 yr old DS called Sidney and we shorten it to Sid. He loves it as he only meets another Sid v occasionally. Not met any girls called Sidney as yet.

We wanted something not too commonplace but not too unusual either. Still like it 5 years on!

Honeybee79 · 18/09/2016 12:24

Should add that no one has ever asked if we named DS after Sid Viscous!

We're now expecting a girl and both DH and I really like Nancy, but have had to rule it out for obvious reasons . . . Grin

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 18/09/2016 12:51

I get asked it all the time!!! Confused

Honeybee79 · 18/09/2016 13:10

That is just odd Ineedmorelemon!! Presumably in a jokey kind of way?!

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 18/09/2016 15:02

Nope sometimes from strangers!

I don't even look punk or alternative in any way Grin

ImSoVeryTired · 18/09/2016 15:06

Old fashioned name due a comeback. I like it and Sid for short. Really don't like the female version.
