Thoughts on Ariel for a boy? Thanks

I can only think of the little mermaid.

It is a nice name, more linked with girls than boys now, thanks to the Disney film. I immediately think of over-scented washing powder, I'm afraid.

Thoughts:

1. Washing powder.
2. The little mermaid.
3. Please don't.

I don't think you'll get past the Little Mermaid. Not even the washing powder has managed it and that's spent a fortune and has been around years.

A shame, because it is a nice name.

It's a shame that the first associations this name brings to mind are mermaids and washing powder not The Tempest. I really like the name but I can't see you'll ever get past people asking you why you've named your son after the little mermaid, so it's a no from me.

Pronunciation may be an issue - it was always ARR-iel until the washing powder came along and now everyone seems to say AIR-iel. My first thought was the font (I know it's really Arial!), my second was wondering how you want people to say it.

It makes me think of Ariel Sharon, when used as a male name. I'm not sure if that's something you would want?

I don't think children are usually bullied for their names, but in this case..............

I'm sorry but in the uk I think that's a girls name, and likely to lead to a lot of little mermaid comments/teasing.

My first thought was The Tempest. I like it, but it's brave.

that is all very well Ellen but your average playground is full of 'plebeians' who will associate it only with washing powder.

I'm not sure. I quite like it, especially if you're after a Jewish name, but I think you will have people pronouncing it as you do the washing powder, instead of Ahh-ri-al. Also there might be some boy/girl confusion.

Little mermaid- I wouldn't- I've got a weird name and after 40+ years of explaining it to others I would stick with something less problematic.

Well I'm terribly impressed with all the plebeian children who are proficient at operating a washing machine
