Maybe plebeians only use Daz?Grin

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 05/09/2016 17:20

Sylvia Plath's son was called Ariel. I really like it.

soundsystem · 05/09/2016 17:20

I like it too! I'd assume it was a boy as well, if I saw it written down.

DelphiniumBlue · 05/09/2016 17:22

Ariel Bender was pretty cool!

eyebrowsonfleek · 05/09/2016 17:23

In a typical UK playground, kids will assume that he's named after the Disney Princess.

heateallthebuns · 05/09/2016 17:26

If kids are looking for someone to tease, there's their ammo.

BertrandRussell · 05/09/2016 17:26

Just check with a passing teenager.

YourNewspaperIsShit · 05/09/2016 17:28

I love it, it was in my short list for DS. And don't even think about the washing up powder because children really don't tend to know washing powder brands, it's not as popular as it used to be for washing anyway

Still The Little Mermaid ruined it for me Sad Literally the only reason we didn't go with it and I was gutted as I think it's such a strong male name!

YourNewspaperIsShit · 05/09/2016 17:30

I'm someone who has the name of a superhero sidekick and that followed me until I left school (drunk people still mention it) so I think TLM is just too popular to get away with it and it's such a shame

HeadDreamer · 05/09/2016 17:31

I think the playground will associate with the mermaid princess, not the washing powder. I have a 5 yo. It's a disney princess. Everyone knows that.

Not sure how many children know about washing powder.

HeadDreamer · 05/09/2016 17:33

It's like calling your son Elsa, Aurora or Cinderella. Really, it's that popular amongst girls. And if the girls are all into disney princesses, you are sure all the boys will know of it.

Kit30 · 05/09/2016 17:45

Would Arieh (ah-ree-ay)be acceptable if you're after a Jewish name? Only one letter difference . Can't get on board with Ariel for all the reasons above - detergent/girly
Also vague memory of song 'Ariel' by Dean somebody?

Honeybee79 · 05/09/2016 17:49

YoungGirl - Sylvia's Plath's son was Nicholas, wasn't he (Nick and the Candlestick)? She did write a collection of poetry called Ariel though - I think the reference was Shakespearean in her case.

WaitrosePigeon · 05/09/2016 17:50

I quite like it. Only on a girl though.

roseteapot101 · 05/09/2016 17:51

it sounds nice but i think my other half would think i'd gone barmy if i suggested naming our child after a laundry detergent brand

fluentinsarcasm · 05/09/2016 17:52

I'm trying to think of Super Hero sidekicks now.

Penfold?

MrsGsnow18 · 05/09/2016 17:54

I do think it's a lovely name. I had no idea it was a male name too. I've only ever heard of the little mermaid.
Which unfortunately I think will always come up! Especially since Disney re-release all their classics, the films will always be around if you know what I mean.

Thundercake · 05/09/2016 17:55

I know a male 'Irial' pronounced 'ear-e-al'. I think it's odd.

YourNewspaperIsShit · 05/09/2016 18:15

Fluent Think more comic book/famous films Blush

Blackberryandapplejam · 05/09/2016 18:39

YourNewspaperIsShit · 05/09/2016 18:47

fluentinsarcasm · 05/09/2016 19:01

Was so hoping it was Penfold Yournewspaper. Might start to tout it on here, could be the new 'it' name!

YourNewspaperIsShit · 05/09/2016 19:06

It's about time it made a comeback!

ayeokthen · 05/09/2016 19:07

Ariel Castro is what came to mind, sorry.

SerenDippitee · 05/09/2016 19:37

Sylvia Plath named her children Frieda and Nicholas.

Ariel was her horse.
