Welsh names

Ok, after my last total failure here, I'm returning with the second draft of girls names. All Welsh as we seem to agree they are nice and DH is Welsh.

What do you guys think of the following for a girl:

Angharad
Arianwen
Ceridwen
Deryn
Rhian
Seren

Too weird? Too hard to say?

For a boy we have:

Morgan
Dylan
Aled
Emrys

And on a related note, does anyone know of a decent app for recording baby names? Trying to keep my list in one place and my phone seems good.

My two have Welsh names and we're in England. Pronunciation isn't a problem - people pick it up easily

JemimaMuddledUp · 04/09/2016 18:29

Emrys is an old man name to me - but then maybe it is due a revival!

Ceridwen makes me think of witches.

Deryn is quite unusual.

My favourites are Angharad and Alex.

JemimaMuddledUp · 04/09/2016 18:30

*Aled

Obviously autocorrect prefers Alex!

sonlypuppyfat · 04/09/2016 18:38

Welsh names are the greatest in the world EVER no contest , I live in the middle of England and all DCs have proper Welsh names. DS has to tell people what his name is as they don't recognise it from the spelling but no one's had any problems

panad317 · 04/09/2016 18:57

I agree with PP that Deryn is very out there. I'm in North Wales, Seren isn't popular here at all, but is lovely. A few more to add to your list
Awel
Mari
Erin

Ioan
Gruff
Osian

GRW · 04/09/2016 20:08

I love Seren and Ceri short for Ceridwen. Seren was number 17 in the top 100 baby names in Wales for 2015, but is less popular in England.

Heratnumber7 · 04/09/2016 20:12

I love Meredydd for a boy, or Gruffydd.
For a girl, my favourites are Bethan and Catrin. Also Angharad.

soundsystem · 04/09/2016 20:18

Arianwen and Emrys are my favourites from your list (I'm biased as my DD is an Arianwen).

I love Dylan for a boy but it's really popular (not sure if that matters to you).

BestIsWest · 04/09/2016 20:25

I love Iestyn, Aneirin, Taliesin, Emrys, Gethin, Elwyn.

I also like Ceinwen and Esyllt for a girl but I wish I had used Seren for DD.

Caldini22 · 04/09/2016 20:54

I like Rhian, I think it's pretty. I like Dylan best for a boy.

gammatron · 04/09/2016 21:09

I love Seren and Dylan, they were on my list. I think pronunciation will depend where you're based. Going to chuck Evan, Mair and Sioned (my middle name Wink) into the mix as I think they're lovely too.

Tabsicle · 05/09/2016 00:19

Dylan is DH's favourite. Angharad is his top choice for a girl. Currently I am leaning towards Angharad if I can find a more mundane choice for a middle name.

Angharad Mary, perhaps?

WatcherOfTheNight · 05/09/2016 00:27

I love Dylan & also like Emlyn

My cousin is Angharad Mari which I think sounds lovely but I love Eleri.

Tabsicle · 05/09/2016 00:46

Other ideas include Bran for a boy, Branwen for a girl.

DH also reckons Owain should be in the top 5 for boys.

OP posts:
WatcherOfTheNight · 05/09/2016 00:55

I prefer the spelling Owen & you've reminded me of Bronwen which I also like.
With my DC we had a few possibles & once they were born named them what we thought they 'looked' like.

WatcherOfTheNight · 05/09/2016 00:56

Aeron is also nice

GiddyOnZackHunt · 05/09/2016 01:10

Watcher my great aunty was Mari and I did suggest that for dd.
Angharad Eleri is good too.
I liked Owain and that was on my list.

WatcherOfTheNight · 05/09/2016 01:25

So many lovely names on this thread Op, I hope you find some final favourites!

Giddy* it's so surprising how Mai went out of favour for so long,it's so pretty.
Ds1 would've been Mai but he had the wrong bits. Grin

GRW · 05/09/2016 05:17

How about Angharad with Celyn for a middle name? It means Holly in Welsh. It is pronounced Kellin.

Tabsicle · 05/09/2016 05:30

This has been dead helpful. We had a long chat and now we've updated to:

Top girl's names

Angharad
Ceridwen
Rhiannon
Meredith

For a boy we have:

Morgan
Dylan
Owain
Bryn

And I love Celyn and Mari for middle names.

DanniAngelMummy · 05/09/2016 09:27

I love the name Blodwyn...
And Anwen!
We moved to Wales nearly two years ago and I'm pregnant with my 2nd but don't think I can't convince OH to choose a Welsh name X

PattyPenguin · 05/09/2016 13:17

Just be aware that Meredydd / Maredudd is a boy's name in Wales (the second element means 'lord'). It's English-speaking countries that started using Meredith as a girl's name, possibly thinking the -ith ending similar to the ending of Gwenith, a variant of Gwyneth.

The name beginning with Blod- is Blodwen. The -wyn ending is masculine in Welsh and the -wen ending feminine.

Tabsicle · 05/09/2016 13:47

We'll use the anglicized spelling, not the original Welsh one, so I think we'll be OK? But I know it was originally male. Plus, Meredith is currently not one of DH's faves - he says Ceridwen and Angharad are his top choices for a lass.

Current top name choices are:

Angharad Mari

Morgan Victor

Maybe. Argh! So unsure. Maybe we'll change our mind again soon, and, of course, PFB might arrive and not look like an Angharad or a Morgan at all!

Paddingtonthebear · 05/09/2016 13:55

Mari
Elin
Rhiannon
Jenna
Meredith

Hadenoughoftumble · 05/09/2016 15:27

It depends how you want Morgan pronounced- in Wales it's pronounced exactly how you see it (Mor-gan) whereas in England it tends to be pronounced Moh-gun.

I'm Welsh and my favourite girl's names are Angharad, Carys, Gwen & Cadi
For boys I like Ianto, Iestyn, Osian & Taliesin.

I live in a very Welsh speaking part of Wales and the name 'Deryn' is unheard of around here as it literally would be the same as calling your child 'Bird' in English. There's also a saying that goes 'Mae e'n fach o dderyn' which means 'he's a bit of a bird' (meaning a bit wacky/a bit of a boy)- sorry some things just don't translate well from Welsh to English!
