Honest opinions on Kai?

Hi Smile new here!

We both (my husband and I) have a very mixed heritage.

My husband is Japanese/Chinese.

I'm Scottish/English.

It means so many beautiful things, from each different culture. It also works really well in all 4.

What are your honest opinions on the name? It just seems so fresh, handsome and relatively unusual!

I just think of the Rooney's.

It's a great name though.

crayfish · 01/09/2016 13:26

I think K names have been a bit ruined by the Kardashians and the Rooney's I'm afraid. Personally I don't like it, it seems like a 'sound' rather than a name to me for some reason! its also not that unusual, I know a few little ones where I live.

MrsHughesCarson · 01/09/2016 13:26

Me too, Rooneys.

MoreCoffeeNow · 01/09/2016 13:26

It's been ruined by the Rooneys.

Kalispera · 01/09/2016 13:27

There's quite a few round here, and there's a definite, erm, K name thing going on.

Their siblings all have fairly unusual names too, so if that's your thing then why not?

Stripes123 · 01/09/2016 13:27

I did wonder about that Sad however, their other son's name seems to be used?

ugly sounding name and it seems invariably a badly behaved child.

DramaAlpaca · 01/09/2016 13:28

It sounds perfect for you given your heritage and how it works in all of them.

I don't think it's particularly unusual these days though.

FuckyNell · 01/09/2016 13:28

Daniella Westbrook too

MrsHulk · 01/09/2016 13:28

It's a pretty common name now and unfortunately it's a bit "chavvy"

MuttsNutts · 01/09/2016 13:28

Rooneys...Daniella Westbrook...need I say more?

MoreCakeMoreCake · 01/09/2016 13:28

Sorry, I don't like it either. Rooneys.

MrsBungle · 01/09/2016 13:28

I like it. My friends are Welsh and they have a cai with a c.

Cakescakescakes · 01/09/2016 13:28

Its just an awful celeb name to me now

toffeeboffin · 01/09/2016 13:29

Well, Kit sounds American and I've heard it lots more than Kai.

I hadn't heard Kai until the Rooney's.

Sillybillybonker · 01/09/2016 13:29

I know a Kai - nice lad and a nice name. Go for it.

Stripes123 · 01/09/2016 13:29

Maybe it's just unusual where I am! I haven't met one! Might be because it's our first child, so haven't met that many children.

Kai/Kaj is very common in the Scandi countries where it means quay - also the "K" names where your Scandi doctor or professor is likely to be Kristina or Kristian etc

Stripes123 · 01/09/2016 13:30

Chavvy? Confused

Thanks for all the opinions.

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 01/09/2016 13:31

I was going to say that I fear it won't be a popular name on here and you might need to brace yourself for negative views since you've asked for honest opinions.

'Chavvy' is a horrible term to use about a name.

Bohemond · 01/09/2016 13:34

Definitely chavvy

Stripes123 · 01/09/2016 13:34

We like Tom and Matt - my husband says they work well in Japan/China. However, people will always assume it's short for something.

OP posts:
Stripes123 · 01/09/2016 13:36

Sorry, but how is it chavvy? It's a name that has so many great meanings/is very multicultural.

OP posts:
FoxesSitOnBoxes · 01/09/2016 13:46

I think that it's a lovely name and that you should definitely use it if it has cultural significance to you both.
It's a K name and the Rooneys have one which isn't great. I've met a few little boys called Kai who have been pretty badly behaved but I think it's definitely a nicer name than the Kaydens and Jadens that it might be associated with
Go for it!

chicaguapa · 01/09/2016 13:49

I think Kai with that heritage sounds nice. Kai without that heritage is not.

Unfortunately it isn't fresh or relatively unusual though.
