Honest opinions on Kai?

Hi Smile new here!

We both (my husband and I) have a very mixed heritage.

My husband is Japanese/Chinese.

I'm Scottish/English.

It means so many beautiful things, from each different culture. It also works really well in all 4.

What are your honest opinions on the name? It just seems so fresh, handsome and relatively unusual!

Matt is lovely!

mouldycheesefan · 01/09/2016 13:51

Kai is dreadful and chavvy.
Matt or Tom are much better.

kiwigirl92 · 01/09/2016 13:53

Kai in Maori means food 😁

allnewredfairy · 01/09/2016 13:53

I do associate with chav names unfortunately. Tom and Matt are lovely. I tend to try to imagine names on their CVs when they're older. There is a newsreader at the moment called Kylie. Very professional, good at her job but I can't help but wince when I hear her name.

EssentialHummus · 01/09/2016 13:53

I think Kai with that heritage sounds nice.

Yes, me too. Bonus points if he has a Chinese/Japanese surname, for maximum un-Rooneyness.

allnewredfairy · 01/09/2016 13:54

Sorry, that should read 'I do associate Kai with chav names...'

Tiggeryoubastard · 01/09/2016 13:56

Ugly name, and very downmarket. Think mullet and earrings. And it's to the Rooneys taste. What's to like?

I hate the word 'chavvy' but yes Kai is very downmarket

Floggingmolly · 01/09/2016 14:03

No. It's been hijacked by the chavs.

TheNaze73 · 01/09/2016 14:03

It's not my favourite

monkeygone · 01/09/2016 14:06

Okay, I agree that Kai is usually very chavvy, but it does sound pretty awesome with that surname Grin

HairsprayBabe · 01/09/2016 14:06

If I was a teacher, I would see that name on the class list and the warning bells would be going off.

It screams trouble maker who's parents think they gave life to the next messiah.

pepperpot99 · 01/09/2016 14:07

Very chavvy I'm afraid.

EssentialHummus · 01/09/2016 14:08

It sounds great with your surname, IMO.

Stripes123 · 01/09/2016 14:09

Hairspray, that's really sad Sad I hope my son won't have a teacher who will judge him due to his name, before they have ever met him!

EarthboundMisfit · 01/09/2016 14:09

When I saw the thread title, my first thought was 'really chavvy'. I know that's not a kind thought to have, but that's my honest reaction.

redheadbarmaid · 01/09/2016 14:12

Well I totally disagree, my son's a kai and it really suits him. Only realised the dislike for it since came on mn!
Never had any negative comments either.
Like to think I'm not the least bit 'chavvy' either for what it's worth!

FoxesSitOnBoxes · 01/09/2016 14:12

It's excellent with your surname

mouldycheesefan · 01/09/2016 14:13

Teachers always judge kids by their names when they get the class list!
There is usually an annual ,list of "names teachers dread" google it, may be under naughtiest children names. Kai is usually on it.

badg3r · 01/09/2016 14:15

I actually really like it, but it is the name of the son of friends of mine so I have nice associations with it! RE Kai Rooney and the Kardashians, they will be forgotten by the time your DS is in his teens/20s so I wouldn't worry about it to be honest.

With your surname is it AWESOME!!!

JasperDamerel · 01/09/2016 14:16

I love the name Kai, and have done since I was little. It makes me think of The Snow Queen and Arthurian legends, and brave boys in snowy Northern landscapes. BUT, I wouldn't use it for my son, because in the past ten years or so the associations have changed, and it has become (as many previous posters have mentioned) an obvious class signifier.

SvalbardianPenguin · 01/09/2016 14:16

I used to like it but I've known 3 or 4 and they were all 'interesting' characters.

doyouseeme1 · 01/09/2016 14:19

I love the name, it was high on my baby name list but my oh hated it. I do prefer the spelling Cai to Kai though. It's not very popular where I am and it isn't chavvy either.

KoalaDownUnder · 01/09/2016 14:19

I just don't like it at all. I don't like anything about it, I'm afraid, and the Kais I've met have done nothing to improve my opinion.

I think it's 2016's version of Taj, which was popular about 10 years ago.

If you're after a Japanese boys' name starting with K, can I throw in Keishi? I taught a Keishi once and he was awesome.
