OH is Brazilian and we live in Brazil. Bento is a very old Portuguese name.

Does it sounds ridiculous in English though? What with it being kind of almost the word "bent"? Shock Blush

" Also forgot Jorge, "

Please do not do this to any kid who will be in school in the UK.
'whore'gay'?
Yes great idea.

Middleoftheroad · 01/09/2016 10:39

I like the name, but when I was growing up, bent was always used as a derogatory term for somebody who isn't straight. Knowing how kids are, he could get a ribbing at school.

Caipora · 01/09/2016 10:41

user1471734618 the J in Portuguese is similar to the English. Not like the Spanish J.

Spaghettidog · 01/09/2016 10:47

Oh, Mateo is also lovely, though I'm still holding out for Thiago.

Caipora · 01/09/2016 11:16

Just got to work and have a list of names on my desk. Here's some more

Francisco
Nicolas
Christopher
Iago/Yago
Ítalo

" Not like the Spanish J."

oh well that is something....still have 'gay' on the end though.

monkeygone · 01/09/2016 11:37

Nope, sorry user1471734618, the g in Portuguese Jorge is also pronounced very similarly to English. So the name is actually very similar in full, just with a softer sounding J and g, and no whores or gays at all!

Thanks Caipora! Unfortunately most of these have been vetoed for one reason or another! Lucas I actually do like but we vetoed it precisely because it's so popular in both countries!

We do have a couple of strong contenders, just wanted to see the opinion on this one.

A PP mentioned that they'd have never guessed ben-cheen-yo from the spelling, but that's fine because he or we will have introduced him to the vast majority of people he will speak to from the UK, so the English pronunciation isn't too much of a problem.

The Spanish name Jorge sounds like 'whore-gay' to an English ear.
Anyway...

somekindofmother · 01/09/2016 11:42

love benito (but your spelling, sorry can't see it now!)
not so keen on bento

Caipora · 01/09/2016 11:47

user1471734618 That's why I suggested spelling it George, so he wouldn't get called Hor-Hay in England because Portuguese is less well known.

no whores or gays at all! which part of Brazil are you in again? Wink

Lucas is a fantastic name, I have a Lucas and he is the only Lucas in his class of 13 (10 boys).

How about Nico?

user1471451684 · 01/09/2016 11:56

Makes me think of Musolini!

monkeygone · 01/09/2016 12:02

which part of Brazil are you in again?

Haha! Grin

Just to add to the anti-Bento voices: isn't there a massive expat Japanese community in Brazil? So it's not just in the UK that you risk the 'box' thing!

Idliketobeabutterfly · 01/09/2016 12:38

Nope... its a japanese lunch box.

Caipora · 01/09/2016 12:48

Not to get geeky but I think it depends which syllable the emphasis is placed on. I might be wrong but I think in Japanese the emphasis is on the O or the O is drawn out, but in Portuguese it's on the B making a subtle difference. The Japanese Brazilians I know all have Portuguese names, like the now famous Newton Ishii. There are hundreds of Brazilian men above the age of 30 that have English surnames as first names, it was a "thang".

Titflaps · 01/09/2016 12:55

Made me think of some sort of breath mint for some reason - mento perhaps. I'm not sure oh bento sorry, I'm not even sure what a bento box is.

passingthrough1 · 01/09/2016 17:52

Haven't read all this but just the title made me hungry Smile

Xmasbaby11 · 01/09/2016 17:55

You can't call him bento. The lunch box meaning is too well known.

Xmasbaby11 · 01/09/2016 17:57

There are some Portuguese words in Japanese such as 'pan', meaning bread.

PotteringAlong · 01/09/2016 18:38

Love Nuno!

MrsGsnow18 · 01/09/2016 19:59

Ben-cheen-yo! I love this name!
I wouldn't have got the pronouncation without help but once told it's really lovely.
Much prefer to Nuno.

HandbagsAndGladrages · 01/09/2016 20:01

Pies.

SarahAnderson · 01/09/2016 20:06

The thought of saying Ben-cheen-yo with that Bentinho spelling makes my head hurt. I find it really disorientating when spelling and pronunciation diverge so much (like having two friends Niall, one 'Knee-all' and the other 'Nye-all', or a girl Sara who insisted it was pronounced Sarah)

heron98 · 01/09/2016 20:14

I used to know a drug dealer called Bento
