Regretting my baby name choice

When I choice the name for my DC i liked it because I hadn't heard anyone where I live with that name. I chose it from the baby name book. I struggled with boys names and there are very few that I like.

However since reading on mumsnet (and I don't know why it bothers me but it does) a lot of people have said it's a chav name. I never thought you could really get chav names just chavy people?

But it's made me very insecure and I'm seriously considering changing it now. Am I being stupid? It's upset me quite a bit.

I have a Harrison and he is not at all chavvy! I love the name (obviously). It's more unusual than Harry but gives you a good option for shortening.
I've only had positive comments.
He is a cheeky monkey though!

thecatsarecrazy · 25/08/2016 12:13

my son is called Harrison. Never heard it being called chavvy. There are no other Harrisons at his school so I like that.

Porcupinetree · 25/08/2016 12:34

One of the most well off families around here has a Harrison, I wouldn't think 'chav', not that many decent people do to be honest it's a horrible term.

Cellardoor23 · 25/08/2016 13:20

I know. It's just that I've seen that word thrown around quite a lot on here. Made me paranoid thinking there was such a thing, especially a name!

Some people on MN are obsessed with 'chav' this and 'chavvy' that. It's tedious.

Harrison Ford seems to have done okay for himself. On the subject of Mr Ford that gives me an excuse to share my favourite photo of him. Behold the beauty.........

(He's the one on the right. I'm sure the other men are lovely etc. etc but focus on the right hand side of the photo).

Mmmm. I'm focusing! Wink. Now there's a real man.

Puts me in mind of this.

That's just......I can't even...................I mean..............What..................Er.

Someone save that poor model!

Cellardoor23 · 25/08/2016 15:08

He was very attractive back then! Strangely enough that's not why I picked the name although my DP loves Indiana Jones! I was just flicking through the baby name book and it popped out at me.

I love the name Harrison. Absolutely love it. Excellent choice OP

LaraG13 · 25/08/2016 15:28

It's a lovely name. Mumsnet isn't a representative crosssection of the real world. I'm sure the vast majority of people you and your son meet won't make any judgements about him or you based on that name. It's a nice, normal name and most people won't give a second thought about a perfectly pleasant name like that in real life.

LondonGirl83 · 25/08/2016 17:50

Harrison is a lovely name. I don't know anyone who I'd call chavy so I don't know what chavs call their children. I think people who go around saying things like that are insecure about their own social status. Roll your eyes and carry on.

altik · 25/08/2016 17:55

Always take Mnet opinions with a pinch of salt. Over the years I have seen my daughter's name described as both chavvy and posh / pretentious!

One man's meat and all that...

So long as you like it, who cares what a random bunch of strangers on the Internet thinks.

villainousbroodmare · 25/08/2016 20:33

It's not chavvy at all - I do think that there are names that do, unfairly, carry class connotations, but Harrison isn't one.

Actually the poshest boy I know is called Harrison.

StylishDuck · 25/08/2016 20:39

I love Harrison. I would've used the name myself for a boy but our surname ends in 'son' so it would have sounded a bit weird (also I had a girl not a boy Grin)
I like Harris too. That's definitely near the top of the list for a potential DC2

Blahia · 25/08/2016 22:25

Harrison is a great name!

First of all; I don't get any 'chavvy' connotations with it at all.

Second of all; what does it matter? Mumsnet is full of very vocal people, some of whom express themselves very rudely! I bet you wouldn't be keen on everybody's chosen names here, but that's the beauty of it: we all like different names and it would be boring if our children we ALL called the same!

Don't change it on account of mumsnetters ' opinions, if you love it keep it, but if you're having second thoughts for other reasons then log off mumsnet and make a decision -it's not too late. X x

I went through the same thing with my Harrison (now age 4). Thought it was really unusual when pregnant then suddenly heard it everywhere once I'd had him and really worried that it was chavvy. He has become a Harry but has decided that he wants to be known as Harrison once at school. I do worry that people think it's chavvy but he certainly isn't and it suits him

SleepFreeZone · 02/09/2016 21:22

Harrison isn't chavvy, it's lovely

PurplePenguins · 02/09/2016 21:27

Harrison was probably about 193846422857 on my list of names I thought you would type.

I love the name Harrison x

chocoLit · 02/09/2016 21:54

It's lovely and allows for Harry or Sonny as a nn.

According to the wisdom of MN my DD1 is common, DD2 is chavvy and DD3 should only be used for a boy. Not bothered one little bit!!

Enjoy your lovely baby Smile

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 02/09/2016 22:01

Harrison is fine. I do think some names are very Chevy but Harrison isn't one of them.

Remember that Mumsnet is full of people who aren't happy unless children are all called James and William or Lucy and Alice.

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 02/09/2016 22:01

Chavvy not Chevy Grin

katemess12 · 02/09/2016 22:48

Harrison has been a popular name for eons in Australia. I actually grew up thinking that Harry was a shortening for Harrison, because the only Harrys I knew had Harrison as their full name!

Lovely name with no negative connotations (here, at least). Smile

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/09/2016 23:11

Personally, I wouldn't choose Harrison for a son of my own.

Do I think it is a bad name? No, not at all. I know Harrison nn Harry who's in his mid twenties now.

DPotter · 02/09/2016 23:13

I like Harrison ! Good strong name and a lovely nn potential with Harry
