I'm not sure it's a name I would use but I definitely think that Schuyler is seen as the correct spelling and have seen it before. I much prefer it to the anglicised "Skylar". I think of it more as a girl name than a boy name.

GraceGrape · 19/11/2016 16:55

And I'm another one that knows it because of the Anne of Green Gables actress!

Schuyler, in Europe, isn't 'skyler' it's more like Shoyler.

Might work in the States, but not UK unless you want to be correcting people all the time.

I'm all for using proper authentic spellings of names, whatever their country of origin. I didn't know that 'Skylar' was of Durch origin and would not have recognised the name you posted as a being said the way Skylar is, and I'm a German-speaking MFL teacher and generally very good with foreign words. It's not that you shouldn't use it, it's just that you and your child might get very fed up with mispronunciations.

I'm Dutch, and to the best of my knowledge, this is not a name that's often used as a first name. It's a surname, which was anglicised and turned into a first name when it ended up in America. To use it as a first name sounds odd to my Dutch ears, whereas Skylar sounds fine.

I would have pronounced if skyler.

Call your baby what you want and Spell if however you like. I like it

JessieDoops · 23/11/2016 22:39

It*

OP please do not think that all us Brits are so small minded. With Dutch heritage I think a Dutch name is totally appropriate wherever you live. Choose the one you love best and feel sorry for people who so proudly display their ignorance.

FastWindow · 24/11/2016 01:04

I think all teachers will call her/him Shooyeeler. The more educated will attempt Skoyeeler.

From a Nordic person view. Why do you want to hang this incredibly difficult name on your child?

hoddtastic · 24/11/2016 01:30

I would pronounce it properly- but don't really like it, or Bram if I am being honest, Vincent is the least bad but only at a push,

MangosteenSoda · 24/11/2016 01:31

I thought Schuyler looked like a boy's name until I found out it's Skylar which, to me, is a girl's name.

Dutch spelling/pronunciation is not at all well known in the UK, so it's going to be an ongoing pain in the neck for the child.

I speak conversational German and have lived in South Africa so have some familiarity with Afrikaans spelling and my best guess would have been Shoy-ler/Skoy-ler.

I know a Dutch family now (not in UK, but English is the common language for expats here). They have a little Guusje. Absolutely no one can says right and I feel a little sorry for her always correcting people. Some names just don't travel well.
