Oh.... So is it said Bram or Braahm?

AustraliaAmerica · 19/08/2016 17:57

We find girls names easier, as we are keen on the ones that work all across the globe.

We could do Vincent Bram Schuyler or Bram Vincent Schuyler, if it's not too much.

Boy - Bram
Girl - Skyler

Sorry but other spelling of Skyler looks very 'made up'. A bit like Jorja for Georgia.

Alicekeach · 19/08/2016 17:57

I like Schuyler, which I've always thought of as the proper spelling (like the actress Schuyler Grant who was in the Anne of Green Gables films). If you have the Dutch heritage to go with it, I'd say go for it. It's a beautiful classy name.

SonicSpotlight · 19/08/2016 17:57

I manage to get through most days not mentioning them Wink

I really like Vincent.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/08/2016 17:57

Your surname is Dutch and you have Dutch heritage - then you can spell it the Dutch way

Just be aware that since you're not Dutch and you're not speaking Dutch and living in a Dutch community then she'll have to spell it every day of your life you live in the UK Grin

And she'll have to explain how to pronounce it too. Every day you live in the UK.

Have you considered Bob? Grin

PotteringAlong · 19/08/2016 18:01

People are giving you opinions on the name - they're saying it's fine but no one will be able to pronounce it or spell it and that will be irritating for you and / or your child.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 19/08/2016 18:02

I'd have pronounced it School-yer.
It looks nothing like Skyler. Which is equally as awful.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 19/08/2016 18:04

Yooneek spellings IMO are fine provided you can tell what the name is.
Eg.
Skyla
Skylagh
Would be okay

AustraliaAmerica · 19/08/2016 18:06

Ilive it isn't unique ffs!

Laniakea · 19/08/2016 18:11

I really like Bram Vincent Schuyler Smile

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/08/2016 18:12

I would go with Schuyler if you are going to use the name. I'm not a fan of the name personally, though do prefer the original spelling to the horrid Skyler spelling.

Bram is nice.

Heatherbell1978 · 19/08/2016 18:13

Ok you know it's a Dutch name and you don't think it's that unusual and you know how to pronounce it. Great. Hardly anyone else will. I would look at it and assume you couldn't spell. I know an 'Ameleya' which I'd put in the same bracket. Sorry but you asked,

glitterwhip · 19/08/2016 18:13

It's very unique if you're going to be living in the uk op ..no point getting stroppy when people are giving you opinions which you asked for

EvilTwins · 19/08/2016 18:15

I know how to pronounce it, but them my current obsession is the musical Hamilton (which features a whole family of Schuylers)

Hurricane99 · 19/08/2016 18:17

Bram is cute

QueenJuggler · 19/08/2016 18:17

Schuyler is nicer than Bram.

MrsJoeyMaynard · 19/08/2016 18:18

I've come across a Schulyer pronounced as Skyler before (girl, family also said they wanted the Dutch spelling), so would now default to pronouncing it Skyler, but before that, I'd have mangled it horribly. It's not one where the pronunciation is obvious from the spelling for me.
It's also a name I associate as being a girl's name, as I've only ever met female Schulyer / Skyler's before.

I prefer Vincent out of the names you've mentioned.

MrsGsnow18 · 19/08/2016 21:50

I think it would suit a girl more than boy but that's just personal opinion.
You have Dutch heritage so I understand choosing that spelling.
People will at first find it hard to pronounce in the UK I'd imagine.
I wouldn't have had a clue from reading it and was surprised to find it was said like skylar.
People wil get used to it though!
Name your child what you like OP and what fits with your heritage! Smile

HettyB · 19/08/2016 22:16

If you live in the UK, then don't. I'm usually pretty good with pronouncing unusual names and I said it "Shy-ler" or, at a push, "Shoe-ler".

If you want it pronounced Skylar, spell it that way.

For some reason I think of Skylar as a girls name, but read Schuyler as a male name.

DeltaSunrise · 20/08/2016 03:26

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that the original spelling was Schuyler. I don't know anyone with this name or have any Dutch heritage but still knew it was pronounced Skylar. But now I'm wondering how I knew that Confused

I like it op.

KoalaDownUnder · 20/08/2016 03:50

I'm with you, Delta!

I've known Schuyler was pronounced 'Skyla' for as long as I can remember. I honestly thought it was common knowledge (obviously not!). Really surprised at this thread.

I think Skyla looks 'yooneek' and Schuyler looks classy and correct.

I really like it!

CaoNiMao · 20/08/2016 05:09

It puts me in mind of an old Jewish professor. Which isn't a bad thing!

bearleftmonkeyright · 20/08/2016 05:19

I like it, I would keep the Dutch spelling.
