Name for DD1 - Juno?

MrsKoala · 06/08/2016 22:13

I am due a little girl in October and already have 2 boys. The boys both have classical names, but that wasn't an intentional theme really. We like a few girls names (most also classical) but Juno is the one which is growing on me the most.

I always like to check a name out on a MN thread in case i'm missing something awful! Grin

It's not awful is it? There isn't an infamous serial killer called Juno or summat? I know there was an indy film a while back, but i never saw it. I don't think it was too offensive.

Also we can't think of any middle names to go with it. Any suggestions welcome.

Love Juno. Also love Minerva but didn't have the courage or permission to name our daughter either.

TwentyCups · 08/08/2016 12:35

To me it is the film and I can't separate the two. However I suspect if I was a little older or a little younger it wouldn't cross my mind.
It's a lovely name and much more modern than June.

heron98 · 08/08/2016 14:41

Your kids have lovely names but wouldn't last five minutes in my neighbourhood. Perhaps you live in more salubrious circumstances than me!

LaGattaNera · 08/08/2016 14:43

lovely name - I was at school with a Juno years ago - such a pretty unique name!

LaGattaNera · 08/08/2016 14:45

If she will be wrestling and smashing walls, perhaps Xenia (Warrior Princess) might be better!

ummlilia · 08/08/2016 16:10

It's my nickname at work, and I love it..far better than my actual name which is the boring and old fashioned 'June'. (I hated it growing up in the 70s and only finally feel I have grown into it in my 50s) I also get called Juniper.. Smile

MrsKoala · 08/08/2016 16:38

We never considered them getting any stick for the names. Sebastian is the most popular name in ds1 preschool.

To make it worse for them we call ds2 Lulu. But I can't imagine anyone will be laughing at him - he looks like the hulk and has quite a temper too. We often joke he will be 'the boy named Lu' like the Jonny cash song.

We do live in a quite salubrious place tho.

I fnd it a bit try hard, sorry Blush

LewisAndClark · 08/08/2016 17:26

I love it. I love all your names.

If ds2 was a girl he would have been Calliope. Even though dh vetoed it Grin

MrsKoala · 08/08/2016 17:34

Trying hard for what? To look cool? To look clever? To look quirky? To look different? Is that the same as all of the names we like or just Juno?

Juno in this instance. I'm not really sure how to explain 'try hard' in words..

JujuMonster · 08/08/2016 19:41

I've de-lurked and reinstated my account just to comment on this.

Our toddler DD is Juno so we obviously love it. Paired it with a more classic MN in case she fancies something more yawnsome when she's older.

Interesting reading the comments on here, particularly the "trying too try hard" ones. Trying too hard for what exactly? Something strong? Interesting? Outside the top 500? Yes definitely, so what?

I have heard it's a hipster name, although I don't know if this is strictly true. We don't work in the media, only have 1 fixie and 3 Fjallraven backpacks, so it's difficult to say whether we're hipsters or not. Probably a bit borderline if I'm honest.

We've only ever had very positive responses to her name, aside from my dad who at first was all "you're definitely going to call her that??", but he got over it very quick.

MrsKoala your DSs names rock, I may add them to my list of imaginary boys names.

We live in a particularly insalubrious area, although it is very multicultural so there are all sorts of amazing names in DDs nursery class. I have yet to meet another Juno!

I think you should definitely name your DD Juno, unless you live near me obvs Wink

WaitrosePigeon · 08/08/2016 19:48

Juju, I hope I've not offended you - that wasn't my intention.
However this is a board to discuss names, our likes and dislikes so I do find it a bit Hmm that people are questioned on their answers.

My daughter has a name that is smashed to bits on here all the time, not that I care, but I don't take offence - I can't, it's a board for discussing names.

JujuMonster · 08/08/2016 19:51

I'm not offended in the slightest Smile just genuinely interested!

Takes a lot more than that to offend me, fear not Wink

WaitrosePigeon · 08/08/2016 19:53

I'm glad you didn't take offence. The name my son has has also been described as 'trying too hard' in the past, especially the spelling.

'Trying too hard' is a hard one to explain. I know what it means in my head but can't write it out.. Blush

AtiaoftheJulii · 08/08/2016 19:54

Juno's a great name. Goes really well with your boys too. I liked the film and the character of the fictional Juno.

Juno Penelope popped into my mind, but Juno Persephone could work too?

MrsKoala · 08/08/2016 20:03

I wasn't questioning you either in a hostile way pigeon, just curious. I have been called pretentious for my ds's names so i was wondering if that was it really.

Sorry Koala I hope my comments didn't come across pissy Blush

MrsKoala · 08/08/2016 21:06

No, course not, but i think it's normal in a discussion to question someones answer if you want to understand it further. I suppose i think it seems odd that you think Juno is try hard but Persephone or Artemis not. I would have thought it would be all or none iyswim.

I am liking Juno Persephone. I may keep Artemis for the next girl Grin

OP posts:
WaitrosePigeon · 08/08/2016 21:22

I love Persephone - it was on my list for our daughter but DH wasn't keen.

Definitely not all or nothing, but anyway who gives a shit what I think, choose what you like. Juno Persephone works Cake

MrsKoala · 08/08/2016 22:47

I am now wavering and flitting back to Artemis and Persephone, but DH seems fixed on Juno. Drat. I should have kept my mouth shut.

StandardLampski · 09/08/2016 20:29

I love Juno - on my list too so glad to hear what everyone thjnks - but no one has mentioned Juno and the Paycock! How ? (GCSE set text hell....)

MrsKoala · 09/08/2016 20:57

Never heard of it. Perhaps i'm too old and it wasn't on the curriculum in my day!

OP posts:
leoniethelioness · 10/08/2016 15:32

Do you like Junia?

crazymissdaisy · 10/08/2016 15:52

They are lovely names, but to a Classicist like me they do have negative overtones: Antigone was massively messed up by the fate of her father Oedipus, she dies as a martyr to her extremist cause (loyalty to her family and the gods as opposed to loyalty to the state and its laws) and she imagines herself as the Bride of Death, I actually picture her as one of those poor brainwashed young female suicide bombers. Juno was queen yes, but constantly cuckolded by Jupiter and spends a lot of time being the jealous older woman, a bit like Maleficent. All the same that doesn't mean you can't use them and make them your own; it's amazing how quickly associations change and they do sound lovely!
