Name needed for baby girl with health problems

SouthDownsSunshine · 25/07/2016 21:01

We're expecting dd2. Dd1 is called Sophie.

Top of our list had been Eloise, but our baby has major heart problems and almost certainly downs syndrome as well. And Eloise means 'healthy', so it feels a bit wrong to give her that name.

Any other suggestions?

We like names that are classic, and work well in other European languages, particularly French. More than happy to go with a french name. I would love a name that meant something like 'blessing' or 'miracle' etc.

Miranda means worthy of or deserving of admiration

ElornaElephant · 25/07/2016 22:00

Emmeline (Emmie or Milly for short?) means hard-worker, and of course you've got Emmeline Pankhurst!

Imelda also means fighter, Immy for short is very sweet

Best of luck with your precious little girl Flowers

muumimamma · 25/07/2016 22:04

OP, you said you might like a name that means something like "blessing". Someone suggested Benedicta earlier - it means "blessed".

daisydalrymple · 25/07/2016 22:05

Very best wishes to you all. I've always thought Sophie and Charlotte are the most beautiful names together.

Expatmomma · 25/07/2016 22:12

So sorry to hear that your daughter has health challenges.

Your love for her shines through.

How about Phoebe Claire or Phoebe Clare. It would mean either
Bright Light or Pure Light.

SarcasmMode · 25/07/2016 22:12

Very best wishes to you and your little girl.

I have an Any which means loved and the French version is Aimee.

Isabelle/a is a lovely choice too.

Gabrielle/a
Colette
Danielle
Fiona
Leah
Marielle
Rebecca
Roseanne/a

SarcasmMode · 25/07/2016 22:13

I meant Amy obviously.

insan1tyscartching · 25/07/2016 22:14

Lucy means light.
Zoe means life

coolaschmoola · 25/07/2016 22:19

I think Flora is a beautiful, sunshiny sort of name.

lalalandxx · 25/07/2016 22:23

Eloise has other meanings of "warrior" and "robust" just as a thought.

Best wishes for you and your family.

Scribblegirl · 25/07/2016 22:27

Perhaps Stella?

muddypuddled · 25/07/2016 22:35

Sorry to hear your daughter may be quite poorly. We had a similar experience with ds and fortunately he is healthy with no intervention but so worrying at the time. Our dd is Calle Thea Madeleine. Thea is the Greek goddess of light and Madeleine we just loved.

Twoseventhsaweasley · 25/07/2016 22:39

My eldest was born with heart problems. He had successful OHS. I wish you and your family the very best.

If we ever have a baby girl her name will be Hannah. As mentioned above it means "gift from God". I think that Charlotte means "free woman".

sycamore54321 · 25/07/2016 23:12

I also thought of Elodie based on the similar sounds and French theme. I don't know the meaning though. Related is the other lovely joyful name Melodie (or Melody in the English spelling).
one thing I'd say though is that I have seen baby name websites with wildly inaccurate suggestions for the meaning of names so perhaps double check before you write off Elodie.

Best wishes for a safe arrival of your lovely little girl.

Hi OP, I read your post and actually re registered to reply. My son has DS, we had a very high chance but didn't know until he was tested after birth. He had a very bumpy start, which was of course fairly worrying and he had to be whisked off at birth to NICU for support. Of course, we were in tremendous shock as it was very different from my two previous births. However, we had a boy and girl name ready and even in the speedy moments where we only saw the top of his head, they were working on him already and the midwife asked did we have a name as they were wanting to tag him quickly and get him moving to special care. My DH and I looked at each other for a split second, we knew we were already dealing with a very different experience from his two sisters, and we said in a heartbeat "Frederick", for that was our chosen name.
My point really is that he does have a long name, but he was always going to be Freddy on a daily basis. I can't tell you how comforted I was by him having our chosen name, all through the time we were in hospital. He even had surgery at two weeks old and I loved that all the staff called him Frederick very respectfully through out our stay. We had many comments about his beautiful name. Thankfully, no one was rude enough to suggest he'd have difficulty pronouncing his own name.
As a matter of fact, he learnt to sign his name fairly young, maybe 14 months if I remember right and he could read/match his name before he could say it. He first called himself Freddy but now uses Fred a lot and he can say beautifully his whole name, including surname, as it appears it his mainstream school register.
I suppose I want to say our son had health challenges and does indeed have DS but we've never seen that as limiting and certainly not a reason to use his beautiful, already chosen name.
I wish you all the luck in the world...best of luck with the heart difficulties. Did you know there is a specific group for babies with heart problems and DS? My son only had a small hole in the heart which close itself, but he had other medical issues, so can empathise with the stress. I do have to say that you will experience a love like no other from your daughter Flowers

I think Eden is a really pretty name. A friend of mine has a daughter called Eden and she went through a lot as a baby, they almost lost her. She's such a cute little girl.

SouthDownsSunshine · 26/07/2016 21:11

I just wanted to say good luck. My son has very significant physical and mental disabilities but brings so much happiness to our families and I think it is so good for his elder siblings to be brought up in an inclusive family. I hope so much that your daughter's heart problems are not too serious. She will change your life in many ways for the better. Good luck!!!

TrappedNerve · 29/07/2016 07:28

I have a Lucy and it does indeed mean light.
Weirdly so does my name ( Elaine )

I love Belle- French for beautiful.

Also lots of other lovely names on this thread.
Enjoy your little miracle baby x
