I'm unsure... I like it, but then I don't. Thoughts?

I have a Michael who is coming up 3. No one has yet shortened it. I love it, I like strong names and Michael fit the bill. We were told it's boring and too traditional by some but hey ho we love it. We always thought we would shorten it when he was a baby but actually Michael has always sounded perfect.

midsomermurderess · 24/07/2016 16:10

I really like it but not Mike or Mick or other shortenings. I know an adult Michael and if anyone calls him Mike he simply says his name is Michael but you would have to be quite vigilant about it to keep the full name.

Who is like God, who wouldn't want a name that meant that? It was my dad's name and DSs name it's lovely

CakeRattleandRoll · 24/07/2016 16:55

Love it. Would have been on shortlist for DS, but it is FiL's name and we wanted him to have 'his own name'.

Pemba · 24/07/2016 19:10

I like it. I don't think it was ever 'the most common name in the last 70 years'. Unless that poster is in Ireland - maybe that's true over there?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/07/2016 19:18

I have a name that is very often shortened, so does my daughter, so does my son. I've just refused all my life to answer to any of the shorter versions and so has my daughter, and it seems to have worked. My son decided for himself when he was about 7 that he wanted to be known by a short version of his name and that has worked too. It's not inevitable that a name gets shortened, and of course after the first few years that is the child's decision, not the parents'. It's his/her name, after all.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/07/2016 19:19

I like it.

RaspberryBeret34 · 24/07/2016 19:21

Love it. My lovely Dad's name (he's mostly Mike but sometimes Michael). Well known but not common.

notamummy10 · 24/07/2016 19:25

I went to a school with a complete psycho called Michael, he's still a complete prick now.

My next door neighbour's son is called Michael, he's nice but quiet!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/07/2016 19:28

I went to school with a vile red-haired bully called Karen, but fortunately I have met several really nice Karens since! Odd how one experience can completely colour how we feel about a name.

Destinysdaughter · 24/07/2016 19:30

This is one Mickey who really suited his name!

( Mickey Rourke - until he badly fucked his beautiful face up...Sad )

A bit bland and a bit dated.

hownottofuckup · 24/07/2016 19:33

I love it, strong classic name.

MerlinsBeard87 · 26/07/2016 15:05

I like it, but prefer Micah (Mike-ah)

septembersunshine · 26/07/2016 15:17

I know a toddler Michael. I think it's really cute. I think they call him Mikey. Nice to hear something different on a baby then the usual William/Harry/Oliver. Yes from me op :)

Jecan · 27/07/2016 05:42

We nearly called one of our ds's Michael but only stopped because where my DH is from it would be pronounced differently (nearly Michelle) & we wanted a name that was the same in both cultures. But kids with that name get called Mischi here for short which I absolutely love.

Mycraneisfixed · 27/07/2016 06:04

Don't like it at allConfused

AspiringMother · 27/07/2016 18:12

I think it's a bland and overused name. But if you like it then go for it! Grin

AspiringMother · 27/07/2016 18:15

My adoptive grandad is called Michael and he's often called Mick which I'm not terribly fond of. My stepdad's and eldest brother's middle names are also Michael. Idk, it just doesn't ring my bell.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/07/2016 18:23

I just don't get this bland thing when used for a name like Michael which has been consistently popular for centuries. However, I suppose for me the fact that a name is popular doesn't equate to being bland, any more than the fact that nobody else in recorded history has had a name makes it interesting.

My DS name.

timelytess · 27/07/2016 19:38

Love the name Michael. Earlier this year I met a wonderful Michael - had to throw him back, unfortunately, but retain my high opinion of him and his name.

AnotherPrickInTheWall · 27/07/2016 19:40

I love the name. It isn't popular now, but a lovely masculine name for a man. Important to recognise when choosing a name that they are not babies forever .

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2016 19:45
