Help with our dull names

DP and I like boring seventiesish names! We were talking names yesterday for DC2 (to be born imminently) and have a vague list, but would welcome comments or more suggestions. Please don't be offended by my description of the names if you or your DC have them, I guess I just mean we aren't into very fancy or faddy names. Lists so far..

Euan/Ewan
Sam(uel)
Fred(Erick) - though I don't like Freddy
Ford
Elliot
Keir

Hannah
Helen
Eilidh
Laura
Sam(antha)
Nina
Catherine

Some names we have excluded for various reasons: John, Mark, Andrew, Stephen, Jamie, Ross, Alexander, David, James, Fraser, Paul, Peter, Joseph, Kevin, Jessica, Louise, Kirsty, Susan, Gillian, Zoe, Chloe, Fiona, Olivia, Sophie/a.

Both mine have 70's names. I love the fact that they fit well with ours. I have a baby Gregory and have had no negativity towards it's at all.

I could out myself with dds name but think actress in her 40's in a popular film at the moment.

We were worried they might grow up thinking their names are old fashioned and stuffy so they both have more modern and very short middle names that were inspired by family members.

I like Euan and Helen from your list because I don't know of any babies with those names.

Great, more names for us to discuss later.

We are Scottish so no problems with Eilidh and Euan. Though DD doesn't have a Scottish name so I don't know if Eilidh would seem weird alongside.

I wasn't sure about Helen but DP has suggested it a few times. I thin it could be a contender. I also like Naomi.

Ford is off.

I've been out off Lydia by people saying "Lydia Chalmydia", "Lydia Teapot" (Lid of a teapot in our accent) and by my friend's husband singing the Lydia bearded balloongram song from the Fisher King. It's not that I'd let people put me off exactly, just that now I have those associations too! Plus I don't think DP was sold anyway.

Ps Eilidh is gaelic for Helen!

I think Eilidh is becoming well known enough to sit alongside an anglicised name.

Thanks Ningnang, don't worry, it would be one or the other. No Eilidh-Helen or anything!

My Samuel is in no way boring! It's a fabulous name, not too common but not completely unheard of. Our Sammy is lovely and it works very well.

Ford and Keir. Are you a fan of Ford Kiernan by any chance? Grin

I did wonder if that was what had put you off Lydia! There was a Lydia where I used to work many years ago. Some of the young men of the office weren't too fond of her (she was very much senior and often had to give unpopular orders) and used to call her "Chlamlydia" behind her back. As horrible as it is/was, I can't hear the name Lydia without thinking of the nickname now Blush.

Similarly Nina is Nee-Narr (like a fire engine) to me. Again, because of somebody I used to know called Nina who was commonly called Nee-Narr (not by me I hasten to add!).

Of your names, I like Euan & Laura best. I also really like Sam for either sex, but it does seem to be the most popular boy's name in this area - there are 3 Sams in DD's Reception class of 22, for example. It is still a lovely name though.

Best of luck for your imminent delivery! Grin

Evan, Sam Fred, Hannah, Helen, Laura , Catherine. I can't rate them out of ten but none of these is 'dull'. None of them.

I like Ewan but def prefer a 'w' - Ewan or Ewen to Euan. Love Eilidh too. That's not a 70s name! It's an old name but popular now. I think Ningnang was saying was that it would sit alongside your other DC's more English name fine because although it is clearly Gaelic, it's common enough not to stand out - not that she was suggesting you hyphenate it!

Oh thanks everyone. I didn't really mean these names are boring or anything, just they are sort of classic and not fashionable or "out there". Obviously we wouldn't really choose a name we thought was dull!

Hannah has been a strong contender since DP suggested it months ago and I find it hard to really consider any others but Catherine, Helen and Sam are sounding good for girls too, as well as some of the suggestions like Rebecca, Ruth, Rachel and Naomi.

Boys names are even harder because I'll be so shocked if I have a boy. Euan/Ewan is a strong contender definitely. I also like Kerr, which has good family associations, but where we are people pronounce "care" as "kerr" - might be off putting? I've had to let go of my love for John and Mark as DP doesn't like them enough Sad To be fair I've rejected loads of his too.

Looks like I'm in for the duration and this baby may be induced in a few days, thank.
