Or boys names that can be used for a girl (including as an adult woman!). Tradititional, preferably old (biblical, or possibly old English, or similar, or diminutive of those) not American, not unique...

The two names that most closely fit this bill so far are Sam, and Jamie. Neither of which are possible for good family reasons.

Other thoughts are Eddie, Charlie, or Phil. But I don't like the female versions of those names, so it would be the short form only. Would that be ok?

Other ideas?

Barack Obama's mum was named Stanley.

Julian (think Julian of Norwich, the female anchorite who said "and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well)

Vivian. (Doesn't have to be Vivien or Vivienne if female)

Loki. Norse god of mischief, could be either.

Fenris. The Norse wolf god. Nice name, though, for either sex.

Just watch out for shortenings. Quite frankly just pick a name you like and inflict it on your child as we all do - they can always change it.

All the ones I know personally are American names which you said you didn't want. . I have family over there and know kids named Boston, Brighton, Dylan, Austin, Spencer, Kendal, Saxon, Carlisle and Grayson. All girls but I think all totally unisex names.

More I could think of that fit your criteria:

There is no such thing as a unisex name. Except, I suppose, Frances/is. There are boy's names which are also used for girls. Never the other way round.

I know a female Stevie, I love it. I've no idea if that's her full name though.

I also love Jo, Sam, Alex and Robin.

Phil, not so much and Eddie is terrible - at least Phil could be Phyllis or Philomena but what is Eddie short for as a woman's name.

Also, remember that you are naming an actual human being not taking part in a social experiment. Try and think about whether you are making their life easier or more difficult when choosing an unusual name.

BertrandRussell · 17/07/2016 20:13

I know a Stevie too-short of Stephanie.

AdderDingAdderDong · 17/07/2016 20:16

Morgan
Vivian/Vivienne.
Clair or Clare/Claire
I have a feeling Tracey was an older name than you'd think and unisex too.

Bertrand, 'Artemis' is sometimes used as a boys' name.

However, there are some unisex names - surnames used as first names aren't automatically masculine, for example.

BertrandRussell · 18/07/2016 00:52

Well, there are currently 4 boys called Artemisy in the UK- which can be put down to colossal ignorance and the inability to google.......

Jordan?

I saw a woman on tv the other day called Roberta but shortened to Bertie which I thought was nice. She was very posh though and I think that helped her carry it off

Pipilangstrumpf · 18/07/2016 07:23

Lou sounds like loo...Blush'

I do like Alex,Charlie and Jo ad unisex names

fatcathatmat · 20/07/2016 20:35

Be aware with Frances that e is the female for, and i is the male form - if you call a girl Francis you are giving her a male name
