Or boys names that can be used for a girl (including as an adult woman!). Tradititional, preferably old (biblical, or possibly old English, or similar, or diminutive of those) not American, not unique...

The two names that most closely fit this bill so far are Sam, and Jamie. Neither of which are possible for good family reasons.

Other thoughts are Eddie, Charlie, or Phil. But I don't like the female versions of those names, so it would be the short form only. Would that be ok?

Other ideas?

I know a woman called Steve whose full name is Stephanie and quite a few Georges who are Georgina/Georgia.

Phil in The Railway Children is short for Phyllis and Bobby is short for Roberta.

You could have an Olive or Olivia called Ollie.

Though I'm not really convinced by why it's cool to call a girl by a boy's name - I know you said unisex but actually most of the names on this thread are traditional boys' nicknames used instead for girls. They're not really unisex.

BatmanLovesMarmite · 09/07/2016 11:40

There's Eddie, short for Edina on Ab Fab, I suppose.

Phyll in The Railway Children had the full name Phyllis.

feckthemall · 09/07/2016 11:42

Finn is not a girls name or unisex name imo. Nuala is the short version of fionnuala/finnuala.

ThePigeon314 · 09/07/2016 11:44

Sandy, Sasha and Alex all v unisex

Casey is a more modern name of course but I listen to that and i can't decide if I think it's right for a boy or a girl. So that might appeal.

theredjellybean · 09/07/2016 11:45

if you prefer a more masculine name and you end up with a girl, why do you need a 'boys' name that could work on a girl ? why not give her a girls name that when shortened is more of a trad boys name...in future she might prefer a more female name ?

So Charlotte...called Charlie
Georgina ..called george
Frederika ...called freddie
Nigella...called nigel ( not sure i like that one !!)
Phillipa ...called phil
there is even Rupertina ...called rupes ???
Thomasina
Finula
etc etc
pretty much most boys names have feminised version

or

Joanna/Josephine...Jo.

Robin

Don't like Eddie for a girl, reminds me of Ab Fab.

ThePigeon314 · 09/07/2016 11:45

Rowan seems unisex to me. Possibly that's only to me though because I know a female Rowan.

ThePigeon314 · 09/07/2016 11:46

oh, I know!

omg, I like this one.

Kim

I love it for a boy but not for a girl acutally

NapQueen · 09/07/2016 11:48

Elliot

ThePigeon314 · 09/07/2016 11:48

Fionn is a gaelic boys name and Ffion is a welsh girls name so Finn would work for either in my opinion.

slightlyglitterbrained · 09/07/2016 11:49

Morgan
Robin
Lynn (tho I think this may have crossed over to female, except in Wales)
Ash
Aubrey
Quinn
Reed
Kelly

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 09/07/2016 11:53

I think Rowan and Robin/Robyn are lovely

Only other I can thing of that's not mentioned so far is Jodie, i used to babysit a boy called that, and have worked with two female Jodies.

Mottled · 09/07/2016 12:11

Eden was a boys name but now appears more typically to be for girls.

Mottled · 09/07/2016 12:14

And someone on here the other day was querying if Avery was for a boy or girl and the outcome was it is unisex.

MrsGsnow18 · 09/07/2016 12:51

Robin/Robyn

JamieVardysParty · 09/07/2016 13:00

What does anyone think of Lou / Louie?

OP posts:
Changingagain · 09/07/2016 15:26

Hillary is the only one I can think of that I don't think has been mentioned yet.

I like Eddie for both boys and girls. Phil seems very masculine to me, I've known Phillipa's but never heard it shortened for a girl.

MarieJeanne · 09/07/2016 15:31

I like Lou/Louie/Louis/Louise/Lulu
My mum had an auntie called Louie which was probably short for Louise.

TroysMammy · 09/07/2016 15:32

When the Beckhams named their daughter Harper my DM said "it's one of those bisexual names". She meant unisex Grin.

I know of a girl called Ronnie. It's not a nickname but her actual name and I know of a male Jessie or possibly Jesse too but it's no good if your surname is James.
