Really like the name Florence but HATE Flo (Aunt Flo association) Is Flo avoidable or will people just call her it anyway?

I know a Florence who goes by Effie.

WeekendAway · 22/06/2016 21:30

I don't think Flo is inevitable at all. Flossie is much nicer.

Buttercupsandaisies · 22/06/2016 21:33

I know 3 Florence's and all get florrie

spankhurst · 22/06/2016 21:34

Possibly not if you make it clear from the start that her name is Florence not Flo - BUT I think if you hate Flo, Florence isn't the best choice.

I know a Florence known as Floey (rhymes with Zoey)
my mom's a Florence :)

notasausage · 22/06/2016 21:35

Flori would be my thought too.

My Florence gets mostly Florence, Flossie, Flora, Lola or cakeface ;). Never Flo but I don't mind it

herethereandeverywhere · 22/06/2016 21:44

No. Ours gets Florence or (from close family) Florrie. Another shortening (not used by us) is Flossie.

We've managed over 6 years without Flo.

Nearly all of the nicknames sound like vulgar slang to my Irish ears. Could you use the name Flora or Fleur instead?

MangosteenSoda · 23/06/2016 01:31

If you want to choose a nn, I'd go with Flora. I knew a Florence who was commonly known as Poppy!

trixymalixy · 23/06/2016 01:44

My niece is Florrie.

Florrieboo · 23/06/2016 02:51

Our Florence is 4.5 and has never been called Flo (yet) however before she was born I would have been horrified by it, now I wouldn't mind, it would actually suit her.

sycamore54321 I am Irish as well and don't think any of the nicknames sound vulgar, what do they remind you of?
