Opinion on the name Blake (for a boy)...

DS2 is a week old and still has no name. The only name on DH's shortlist is Blake. I'm not convinced, I'm not sure i like the 'bl' sound! I fear if we don't go with it, poor DS will forever remain nameless... what do you guys think of the name?

My 2 year old boy is called Blake! We love it and it suits him. We're certainly not 'scally' - we're decidedly middle class! Glad I didn't ask for opinions on here first though - seems to be some weirdly vitriolic responses!

My parents hated it because they associated it with 'Blakey' from 'On the buses'. I pointed out if any of his eventual classmates watched 'on the buses' they'd have bigger problems than my son's name!

Names are so individual, it's what you're happy with that's important not a bunch of strangers on the Internet.

I like Blake but others I like:

Logan
Flynn
Carter
Dexter
Deacon
Cohen

^^so true vanilla. I'm sure some people pull it off wonderfully well.

It's funny, all the pps who say they know lovely boys / men called Blake also love the name. I happen to know a not very nice (adult), Blake so that probably is why I'm not a fan. I'm sure if I met a lovely Blake I'd start loving the name! Weird. Smile

Whistlejackets · 07/06/2016 22:18

Really don't like it.

MumOnACornishFarm · 07/06/2016 22:26

All these Blakes people are talking about and I've never come across a single one! Sounds like you're going to have a tough time winning over your partner, OP. He's vetoed somelovely names, imho. My two pennies worth:

Rufus
Oscar
Jago
Fergus
Ralph
Avery
Kit
Alexis

Gummibaers · 07/06/2016 22:32

It's a surname to my ears: William Blake, Quentin Blake etc.

Have never seen it as a first name, but why not?

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 07/06/2016 22:52

In all seriousness, I think Blake is a lovely, strong name. It does remind me of Blake's Seven, but that's because I'm a seventies kid!

Blake is a good solid name!

NameChange30 · 07/06/2016 22:56

I like Zack/Zach and Kit.
Also Cole but it's too similar to Leo.

hiddengems · 07/06/2016 23:08

Who are you calling GrandmaAngry

OK, so the 80s were quite a long time ago.

Lilacpink40 · 07/06/2016 23:10

Max yes, Blake no.
Max goes well with Leo too!

EllenDegenerate · 07/06/2016 23:14

It reminds me of a character from Home&Away. I used to watch it in the 90s as a small child but if memory serves he was a loveable tearaway.

I don't know any RL Blakes but it's not a bad name.

pollyblack · 07/06/2016 23:20

I'm surprised people feel so strongly about Blake, I quite like

lordStrange · 07/06/2016 23:48

Max is lovely but sooo 90's

IoraRua · 07/06/2016 23:50

I really like Blake for a boy.
Please do not name your child Avon, Younique or after any other tacky MLM.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 07/06/2016 23:51

Blake is awful. And now I've got the Dynasty theme tune ringing round my head.

Bettercallsaul1 · 08/06/2016 00:00

Don't like Blake - sounds too much like "bleak".

Also not Cole - (unless for venerable monarch)

Leo is great!

Alibobbob · 08/06/2016 00:01

We know a Blake my 7 year old kept calling him Flake by mistake lol.

Tod
Ethan
Nicholas
Nathan
Marcus
Mason
Damon
Grant
Shay
Oliver
Lucas

TinyTear · 08/06/2016 06:20

High five to the others who referenced Blake's Seven x

ABitAsleep · 08/06/2016 15:55

I actually like Blake, a friend has two little boys named Blake and Aidan and it suits him well

midsomermurderess · 08/06/2016 18:04

It didn't do Blake Morrison any harm and that is who I first though of but I think his first name is Philip.

TwinkleStarX · 08/06/2016 22:46

I have a friend who named her daughter Blake.....

What about Nicholas (Nick) or Thomas (Tom)? Does your husband have any positive suggestions?

septembersunshine · 09/06/2016 07:03

I like Blake. But it was my friends surname so I think of it more as a surname then a first. Anyway. What about:

Aidan - we are going with this if baby is a boy. It's a family name.
Oliver
Frederick (Freddie)
Jack
Oscar (yay!). Love Oscar :)
Samuel (Sam)

Good luck op!

Imvotingshakeitallabout · 09/06/2016 07:22

We have a Leo and a Sam....

BlueDove · 09/06/2016 13:47

I like it!
