Both you and DP had settled on a name that you both love, but it was quite an uncommon name at present...

Not a 'yoonique' name.
Not a 'made up' name.

Just a name that, because it hasn't been in the top 500 since the 1950s, isn't on everyone's immediate radar?

We both really like it, and can't see anything wrong with it. It carries well from tot to adult. But there seems to be some people (on the internet, not daft/brave enough to share potential baby names in real life) who vehemently hate it looking at you mumsnet , and others (usually those who've actually met someone with this name) who love it.

Our thinking is that people are way more judgey of names when they're just arbitrary, and should we use it, it'll just become our little boy's name once people get used to it and that'll be that = new positive association. Names that are really popular now, like Henry or Gabriel for example, would have been considered ''cruel'' 10 years ago, and are totally nice names now.

We have a couple of ''back up'' names but DP in particular is really saddened to have to use those and it feels a bit weird to do so since using his ''in-utero'' name.

WWYD?

Is it Clifford or Grover, OP? FWIW I rather like both, but I would wait and see what happens with Mr. Richards before using Cliff.

Is Sesame Street still a thing these days?

insan1tyscartching · 26/05/2016 15:58

I think it would be too easy for him to be called Groover/Groovy and teased for me.

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/05/2016 15:58

I'm sad for poor old Sylvester.

Justmuddlingalong · 26/05/2016 15:59

What was the original question...?

andpropersteel · 26/05/2016 15:59

Yeah, I do get the association (though it didn't dawn on me immediately, so surely not that strong?!). But then there are loads of names that are from children's shows, so I can live with that I think! IMO it's due a resurgence, Mr Snuffleupagus might have to wait a little longer. Grin

That's a fabulous name!

Although be warned, when you announce it, you may get a barrage of poor Sesame St impressions. But once that's out the way, everyone will love it.

LadyAntonella · 26/05/2016 15:59

I quite like both, but agree with becky re Cliff Richard.

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/05/2016 16:00

Well I suppose there's always Grover Washington too.

Very much so in the US but it's no longer on British TV as it doesn't use phonics and it was thought that this would confuse children Hmm

andpropersteel · 26/05/2016 16:01

Sylvester would be awesome but it rhymes with our surname .

That's such a shame. Sesame Street and The Muppets are the best kids TV shows ever I'd say.

I actually don't remember which Sesame Street character Grover was. Was he the blue guy who used to run up to Kermit, slap him on the back and shout 'Hey, froggy baybeee!'

He probably taught me to read. I swear I still hear certain numbers in the Count's voice, and I'm 43 and have four degrees. Grin

NeedACleverNN · 26/05/2016 16:07

Grover

What would you do if...
MitzyLeFrouf · 26/05/2016 16:07

Yes, Grover was the blue one. He had a very distinctive voice (and I can still do a mean impression of him).

What would you do if...
andpropersteel · 26/05/2016 16:08

PrivatePike I didn't want to say right away because on previous threads on the name (admittedly from years ago) the OP had got a bit of a flaming so I wanted more of an opinion based on general un-fashionable names rather than a knee jerk reaction.

Quite pleased to see that some people like it though! I feel a lot more sane now.

Might have to ask you for help with middle-names next if anyone's game?

I LOVE the name!! It's brilliant OP. Unusual enough without being made up

NeedACleverNN · 26/05/2016 16:08

Cross post mitzy Grin

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/05/2016 16:08

Love this guy

ChipsandGuac · 26/05/2016 16:08
Grover was my most favourite character ever.
ChipsandGuac · 26/05/2016 16:09

Oh! Too many games of snap going on! Grin

ChipsandGuac · 26/05/2016 16:10
