I am wavering between commiting to and then suddenly disliking this name! Due any minute...help! What would be your thoughts on a child with this name? Thank you!

With that spelling I would pronounce it Lay-tish-a.

I love Leticia as used to work with one and she was amazing Grin

My dad works with the public (in another country) & says this is the most non-standard name there is, with everyone insisting their spelling & pronunciation is the one and only. Leticia, Lateesha, Latisha, etc.

Charlotte goes nicely with Clementine (Lottie).

mouldycheesefan · 20/05/2016 08:06

People saying gangsta rap, are you thinking of Queen Latifah the rapper?

julfin · 20/05/2016 08:09

I'd also go with the traditional T rather than C spelling

Scribblegirl · 20/05/2016 08:12

Makes me think of the old woman from The Vicar of Dinley who made weird food Blush
(I think that's just me though...)

So a name that is used predominantly by the black community in America is seen as US trash??

Mumsnet at its worst.

Vixxfacee · 20/05/2016 08:23

Didn't see the comment about big bottom black etc.

Clementine and Charlotte are flat arsed white girl names. Is that OK to say?

lljkk · 20/05/2016 08:27

Charlotte E. Ray was a black woman.

Scarlet turns into Lettie if you want that NN.

I like it. I'd pronounce it Let-EES-ia.

EllenDegenerate · 20/05/2016 08:45

Not all black bottoms are fat. Fact.

Why are you lowering the tone with all this talk of asses? Hmm

MaisieDotes · 20/05/2016 08:51

igloo you mentioned your connotations as a reason against the name so stop digging yourself further down now.

squoosh · 20/05/2016 10:41

Some ugly comments here.

Laeticia to me is very 1930s/1940s English name. I can imagine Sarah Waters calling one of her characters this. Or that chattery café owner in Brief Encounter being a Laeticia.

I don't like it though.

WhiteMagnolia · 20/05/2016 10:50

Thanks all...I did ask what people's first thoughts would be so I thank everyone for their honesty...whatever anyone says people are judgemental on hearing names so even if you disagree amongst each other it has been helpful for me! This thread rather cements for me why I keep switching my love/concerns for this name! I'll have to keep mulling! People can be subliminally classist and racist when it comes to names as culturally names are usually derived from different groups of people - recognising this doesn't always necessarily make you a bad person.

Love it. I'd spell it Laetitia. Lie-tish-ah.

There are a couple in my family tree and I considered it as a middle name. I didn't want to use it as a first name because I thought there would be spelling issues.

I think it goes very well with Clementine.

MrsCaecilius · 20/05/2016 14:34

WhiteMagnolia I love it and agree with your spelling. I've met Laeticias and Phoebes before and only have good connotations to the name. Lettie is a really sweet nn and goes so well with Clemmie. Go for it!

LadyAntonella · 20/05/2016 14:40

scribble me too! Blush

IoraRua · 20/05/2016 15:45

Ach, some MNers can be a bit poncily racist when it comes to baby names. And yet squee over incredibly white upper class Little Englander names. You have to bear that in mind when you ask on here OP!

waxweasel · 20/05/2016 15:55

I love it, but DH didn't so vetoed it. Also the variations in pronunciation bothered me - I'd have HATED any approximation to Latisha/le-tee-sha, but I also say it differently to you. I would say it le-ti-sya (so /s/ rather than /sh/. I'm a linguist but not a Latin expert so happy to be corrected though!)

My newborn DD2 is Lettie 😊 So obv I love it. She also gets nicknamed Lettuce a lot (quite a few people have mistakenly thought her name was actually Lettice!). But it's short for Juliette.

CherishFindensRulerOfDeath · 20/05/2016 16:01

I love Clementine, but not Laetitia I'm afraid. For some reason I don't like the variant pronunciations like in Alicia (Alyssia/Aleesha). It also makes me think of Letitia Dean, plus all I can see is the word 'tit' in the middle.

Do you like Vivienne by chance?

BendydickCuminsnatch · 20/05/2016 18:32

Was my dream name for a DD when I was a teen! Then moved on to Lettice which I first heard on Miss Marple.

Do it OP! Phoebe lovely as a middle name too.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 20/05/2016 18:34

Oh Juliette is beautiful too wax! 😍

waxweasel · 20/05/2016 18:54

Thank you 😊 I love it! I was so glad when I found out I was having another girl so I'd get to use it - had no boy names I liked much at all so it was a real relief!
