Ulrich

DH and I have wildly different preferences when it comes to names, I've grown so tired of saying and hearing the word 'No'

My top 2 names: Percy and Arthur

DH's top 2: Hudson and Clay

I hate all his choices and he hates mine, but tonight he suggested Ulrich and I actually really liked it, I swear I had 'no' on the tip of my tongue and just froze when it didn't sound horrid to me.

Before anyone asks we're not German or French, but it's still a name we want to use, we live in London, so not too out there.

What do you think?

It's definitely an improvement on Percy and Hudson!

It is a little bit of a hipster name, but if you move in those circles, I see no problem.

SpeakNoWords · 06/05/2016 00:17

Hmm, makes me immediately think of the character played by Heath Ledger in A Knights Tale (Ulrich Von Lichtenstein). Which might not be a big issue for you!

If you both like it, then that would seem like a reasonable basis for choosing it.

pratiaalba · 06/05/2016 00:26

"The harasser of Paraser"? Grin

I love that film.

mrsschu · 06/05/2016 00:28

It sounds very old school, uncool German to me but that's because I lived in Germany and DH is German. It's fine though, doesn't sound too hipster IMO.

Sophronia · 06/05/2016 00:32

I prefer the similar Alaric / Alarich

Envigi · 06/05/2016 00:33

Pratiaalba , I absolutely adore the name Percy, quite sad I can't use it, we agree on Hudson, it's horrid!

I have never heard of any of those movies, so the references don't bother me.

Arthur is a gorgeous name. Insist on that!

Flopsyhopsy · 06/05/2016 06:38

Ulrich is the opposite of hipster! It's quite old fashioned.

I'm also not sure most English could properly pronounce it (esp the ch).

butteredmuffin · 06/05/2016 10:48

"The protector of Italian virginity!"

"He gave them hell at La Rochelle!"

Grin

Sorry, I'll stop now. Bear in mind that film was pretty popular with teenage girls about 15 years ago, so a lot of women having kids now will hear "Ulrich" and think "Von Liechtenstein". (And then probably have a little daydream about Heath Ledger in his prime... Flowers RIP Heath. Sad)

It's a bit odd, but there's nothing wrong with it, and if you and your husband both like it, why not?

I think it's better than Percy, WAY better than Hudson or Clay, and Arthur is a bit overused at the moment IMO.

Why not? Ulrich. It's nice.

Envigi · 06/05/2016 11:00

I feel like I really need to watch the movie now, I really like the name and I'm glad people don't hate it.

I think it's old fashioned but still usable! Didn't think hipster but I don't mind that association.

I love the name Arthur but DH is adamantly against it and I really dislike Alaric as a name.

Have you not seen the film before? It's ace. Grin

exWifebeginsat40 · 06/05/2016 11:06

as in Lars Ulrich? are you big Metallica fans?

butteredmuffin · 06/05/2016 11:11

If you wanted to consider something a bit more mainstream, have you thought about Eric? It sounds quite similar.

Although it doesn't really sound like mainstream is what you want.

Merrylegs · 06/05/2016 11:15

It's groovy! But how are you pronouncing it? If like an English person I would spell it Ulrik and save him a lifetime of hassle ('it's sch not k')

barnet · 06/05/2016 11:22

Nice name! It's regal. The one i know (norway) is spelled Ulrik, and pronounced as it is spelled.

prettybird · 06/05/2016 11:29

Dh's best man's surname was Ulrich Smile not helping Wink

albertcampionscat · 06/05/2016 11:31

I thought Metallica too.

Twistedheartache · 06/05/2016 11:32

How would you pronounce it Ulrick or Ulrick?
Would it annoy you if people said it wrongly.
I'm not keen due to personal association but without that it's an ok name.
Prefer Arthur

Envigi · 06/05/2016 11:45

We're pronouncing it as UlriK, so might just spell it that way, we're not Metallica fan's either.

It wouldn't annoy me if people said it wrong.

I like classical vintage names whereas DH is all about trendy American style names, so as this is the only name we both really like, I think I'll have to give up on Arthur/Percy.

I did suggest I name this DC and he can name the next and he agreed but promised if I picked Arthur, he would pick Diesel as a name Shock so I immedielty shelved that idea and now we both have to like the name.

Flopsyhopsy · 06/05/2016 14:19

If you prefer it pronounced Ulrick, then I'd spell it that way.

Ulrich is a German name pronounced Ulrich (like Bach). It would get really annoying for your ds if he had to constantly correct people.

Veterinari · 06/05/2016 18:43

I second alrich/alarick as a nicer alternative

LineyReborn · 06/05/2016 18:45

Utrich pronounced Utrick

Flufflepuff · 06/05/2016 18:48

I heard Von Lichtenstein too Grin

No bad thing to be named after a Heath Ledger character of course.

OhForCodsHake · 06/05/2016 18:57

DS1 is a Percy so that defo gets my vote Grin

Dogolphin · 06/05/2016 19:01

I like it! I would spell it Ulric or Ulrick.
