DH and I have wildly different preferences when it comes to names, I've grown so tired of saying and hearing the word 'No'

My top 2 names: Percy and Arthur

DH's top 2: Hudson and Clay

I hate all his choices and he hates mine, but tonight he suggested Ulrich and I actually really liked it, I swear I had 'no' on the tip of my tongue and just froze when it didn't sound horrid to me.

Before anyone asks we're not German or French, but it's still a name we want to use, we live in London, so not too out there.

What do you think?

It is a little bit of a hipster name, but if you move in those circles, I see no problem.

Hmm, makes me immediately think of the character played by Heath Ledger in A Knights Tale (Ulrich Von Lichtenstein). Which might not be a big issue for you!

If you both like it, then that would seem like a reasonable basis for choosing it.

I love that film.

It sounds very old school, uncool German to me but that's because I lived in Germany and DH is German. It's fine though, doesn't sound too hipster IMO.

I prefer the similar Alaric / Alarich

Pratiaalba , I absolutely adore the name Percy, quite sad I can't use it, we agree on Hudson, it's horrid!

I have never heard of any of those movies, so the references don't bother me.

Arthur is a gorgeous name. Insist on that!

Ulrich is the opposite of hipster! It's quite old fashioned.

I'm also not sure most English could properly pronounce it (esp the ch).

Sorry, I'll stop now. Bear in mind that film was pretty popular with teenage girls about 15 years ago, so a lot of women having kids now will hear "Ulrich" and think "Von Liechtenstein". (And then probably have a little daydream about Heath Ledger in his prime... RIP Heath. )

It's a bit odd, but there's nothing wrong with it, and if you and your husband both like it, why not?

I think it's better than Percy, WAY better than Hudson or Clay, and Arthur is a bit overused at the moment IMO.

I feel like I really need to watch the movie now, I really like the name and I'm glad people don't hate it.

as in Lars Ulrich? are you big Metallica fans?

If you wanted to consider something a bit more mainstream, have you thought about Eric? It sounds quite similar.

Although it doesn't really sound like mainstream is what you want.

It's groovy! But how are you pronouncing it? If like an English person I would spell it Ulrik and save him a lifetime of hassle ('it's sch not k')

Nice name! It's regal. The one i know (norway) is spelled Ulrik, and pronounced as it is spelled.

Dh's best man's surname was Ulrich not helping

How would you pronounce it Ulrick or Ulrick?
Would it annoy you if people said it wrongly.
I'm not keen due to personal association but without that it's an ok name.

We're pronouncing it as UlriK, so might just spell it that way, we're not Metallica fan's either.

I like classical vintage names whereas DH is all about trendy American style names, so as this is the only name we both really like, I think I'll have to give up on Arthur/Percy.

I did suggest I name this DC and he can name the next and he agreed but promised if I picked Arthur, he would pick Diesel as a name so I immedielty shelved that idea and now we both have to like the name.

If you prefer it pronounced Ulrick, then I'd spell it that way.

Ulrich is a German name pronounced Ulrich (like Bach). It would get really annoying for your ds if he had to constantly correct people.

DS1 is a Percy so that defo gets my vote
