Ulrich

DH and I have wildly different preferences when it comes to names, I've grown so tired of saying and hearing the word 'No'

My top 2 names: Percy and Arthur

DH's top 2: Hudson and Clay

I hate all his choices and he hates mine, but tonight he suggested Ulrich and I actually really liked it, I swear I had 'no' on the tip of my tongue and just froze when it didn't sound horrid to me.

Before anyone asks we're not German or French, but it's still a name we want to use, we live in London, so not too out there.

What do you think?

There are other names along those lines you might like.

Wulfric Alrick Alaric

Macsen Aelfric Cenric

I dislike Hudson and Clay, sorry. Percy is imo a nn. Arthur is pretty lovely.

However, I absolutely love Ulrik. My first language is a version of German (expat here), so if you pronounce it like Ulrik (the pronounciation I greatly prefer) why not write it like that?

Ulrik has a very nice meaning and if you spell it Ulrik there won't be any pronounciation confusion, I think. With the ch I could see people trying to pronounce it with a German ch or thinking thiat it's a "g" or "j" sounds, maybe?

Though according to behindthename Ulric is the English version and Ulrik is nordic. No idea if this is important to you? Anyhow, Ulrik/Ulric is just so awesome and gorgeous (yup, I'm totally gushing...)

GinnyMcGinFace · 06/05/2016 19:29

Eric is an alternative that may be less 'out there'?

crumpet · 06/05/2016 19:36

Saw the thread title and immediately thought "von Liechtenstein". Do see the film OP.

Could be a good name.

sonlypuppyfat · 06/05/2016 19:36

I do think percy is awful it really is. And the only thing about Arthur is I went to school with one and his life was made a misery because of it

SleepyRoo · 06/05/2016 19:49

It is SO German that I think quite odd a name for the son of (I assume) British parents. To my ear, anyway

AlmaMartyr · 06/05/2016 20:03

It makes me think of the lovely Heath Ledger in A Knight's Tale too. I loved that character though, and I think it's a great name. If you both love it, go for it.

Envigi · 06/05/2016 20:26

I can't believe so many of you dislike Percy! It's a brilliant name, darn DH for vetoing it,

We've been through all the names you guys have suggested, we both hate Eric, I dislike Wulfric and Alaric and DH dislikes the rest, it's a miracle we both like the same name, so I think we're definetly going to go with Ulrik, spelt as Ulrik !

1horatio your gushing makes me very happy. Thank you Grin

And watching that film, is officially on my to do list, I can just imagine all the comments we'll likely get related to it, so better be prepared.

You know I was not keen because I am not mad about Ulrich, but Ulrik I actually really like.

pratiaalba · 06/05/2016 22:21

What about Kester? Old Scottish name, sounds trendy American (well, a bit, like Preston)
Osric?

Do watch Knight's Tale- it's superb.

MitzyLeFrouf · 07/05/2016 00:08

I think Ulrich/Ulrik has a cool haughty vibe. I like it.

Percy is really quite awful. Arthur is trendy but it's a nice name. Hudson and Clay aren't my style but they're still better than Percy.

GinnyMcGinFace · 07/05/2016 07:27

When we were growing up, if someone 'let Percy out' it meant they had farted...Blush

WhatsGoingOnEh · 07/05/2016 07:33

Percy is a horribly weak, wimpy little name. Imagine your DS as a huge strong man, walking into a room and having to say, in his booming deep voice, "Hello! I'm... Percy." ?!?!

Ulrik isn't as bad. It's still pretentiously "different" though, IME, if you're an English family. Why not go all out and call him Thor?

SanityClause · 07/05/2016 07:36

I did suggest I name this DC and he can name the next

Don't do this!

You will each end up with a child who has a name you really dislike!

I quite like Ulrich, but I'm not sure why spelling with a K would be better. I have a very normal name with an unusual spelling, and it's a PITA.

SanityClause · 07/05/2016 07:40

Actually, I take that last bit back.

I've just googled, and discovered the K spelling is the standard Scandinavian spelling, and that Ulrik is in the Urban dictionary meaning a really cool person with a bit of a foreign air.

I say go for it!

ivegotdreadfulpmttoday · 07/05/2016 07:42

Likely to be shortened to Uli (would be in Germany anyway) if that's any help. I like it but think it's old-fashioned, but so are Percy and Arthur. All good names though. I quite like American names too but more along the surname as first name style such as Jackson or Mason.

1horatio · 07/05/2016 10:37

But Uli is cute :) Ulrich also makes me think of Jan Ullrich... Which isn't a bad association imo.
I'm still totally enthusiastic about this name :) Somebody just has to use it...! :)

Vixxfacee · 07/05/2016 15:55

It is actually horrible.

KoalaDownUnder · 07/05/2016 15:59

I think it is horrible, too. Sorry.

I only know Ulrich as a German surname. (Grew up with friends who had it.)

Percy is the wettest name ever.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 20/05/2016 05:37

Von lichtenstein?
Protector of virgins etc etc
Lol you can't do that to a kid!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 20/05/2016 05:44

He's not a bad character just every time you said his name after in my head it would go like this:
'Ulrick?'
'Vooooooooon lichtenstein'
Then I'd think about the other names and introductions from chaucer...

Natsku · 20/05/2016 05:56

I like Ulrik!

Also quite like Percy though would never call my child that as over here it would be pronounced Pear-ku!

BeastofCraggyIsland · 21/05/2016 10:26

Ulrich/Ulrik is a bit odd for a British child of British parents. It's better than Hudson or Clay though, and definitely better than Percy, which is truly awful and conjures up images of farts, Percy Pig or Percy Weasley from Harry Potter who was the only priggish, wet and unlikeable person in an otherwise cool family!

TwentyCupsOfTea · 21/05/2016 11:04

Percy sounds wet.

Percy Weasley was perfectly named imo, and for me, epitomises the meaning of the name. Other HP fans may feel similar!

It sure about Ulrick. Sounds a bit clunky to me, but probably the best of the bunch.

heron98 · 23/05/2016 16:21

I also think of "Ulrich von Lichtenstein!"

or Ulrich was a very angry ram in an Astrid Lindgren children's story.
