I've fallen in love with it. Knock some sense into me please!

It's a Borrower's name.

It's not the oddest I've heard. And I did love the book as a child.

What about Hetty?

DottyButtons · 05/05/2016 01:38

It's beautiful

LeaLeander · 05/05/2016 01:48

Seriously?

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/05/2016 01:50

I like it.

Halfbaked · 05/05/2016 01:53

I love it

MarthaCliffYouCunt · 05/05/2016 02:24

Is it a real name?

FoxesSitOnBoxes · 05/05/2016 02:42

Google says it was made up for the Borrowers. I'm not sure if that would put you off. I think it's really pretty.
The only thing is that Google also says it is supposedly from Harriet and now I can't stop hearing it as Harrietty but with a dropped H. I think that's just me thougg

SomeDaysIDontGiveAMonkeys · 05/05/2016 02:43

Yes!

Sazbird · 05/05/2016 02:46

Martha I know a kid called deezul. Nowadays people make them up to be unique. I'm finding that traditional names are rare which is why my ds's are Jonathon, Matthew, James and Christine (for my mum). They all have middle names relating to either our or their grandparents.

AyeAmarok · 05/05/2016 03:00

I'd go with Harriet personally with Hattie/Hettie/maybe Arietty as a nickname.

Littlemisslovesspiders · 05/05/2016 03:09

Sorry but no.

Fortunatepiggy · 05/05/2016 03:10

Think it would be better with an i on the end instead of a y. Then I think I would just think it was Italian .. It sounds quite nice

MarthaCliffYouCunt · 05/05/2016 03:16

Shock @ deezul!

Laquila · 05/05/2016 03:21

I do know of an Arrietty, with a sister called Isadora! I think it's a sweet name, and I love the books, but only you know whether you can cope with years of people saying "Harriety?" and looking puzzled.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 05/05/2016 03:28

People who have read the Borrowers will recognise its provenance immediately.
I quite like it but would sooner go for the Greek Ariadne instead.
I agree that people who don't recognise it will expect it has an H at the beginning, like Harriet.

But as made up names go, it's many miles above a lot of them!

GinIsIn · 05/05/2016 03:39

I like it! Yes, it was made up for 'The Borrowers', but Wendy was made up for Peter Pan and Shakespeare created the name Jessica, so why not?

Starman16 · 05/05/2016 03:52

I know of an Arietty - I think it's very pretty. I immediately think of the Borrowers, I didn't realise it was a 'made up' name just for that book tbh - as a PP said a lot of 'proper' names were made up at some point!

mathanxiety · 05/05/2016 04:50

Yes, it is a daft name.

I'm not sure Jessica is entirely Shakespearean. I think he may have adapted it from a Biblical name.

Sophronia · 05/05/2016 05:43

Yes, Jessica comes from the Biblical name Iscah/Jescha.

I prefer Harriet to Arrietty.

msrisotto · 05/05/2016 06:46

I know an Arietty. When I first heard it I immediately thought of the borrowers, but her mum said not many people made the link. I prefer it to Harriet.

Costacoffeeplease · 05/05/2016 06:56

As a nickname fine, as a proper name - don't be ridiculous

wannabestressfree · 05/05/2016 06:58

I love it..... I teach children with far more ridiculous names!

AuntieStella · 05/05/2016 06:59

Yes, I think it was made up of the book and unlike other coined names, never really caught on.

So yes, I think it's still seen as weird but I think it's OK as a name.

JonSnowsBeardClippings · 05/05/2016 07:00

It's really daft

AntiquityOverShares · 05/05/2016 07:01

It's lovely and a name I considered but I only have boys.
