Is Arrietty a daft name?

It's a Borrower's name.

It's not the oddest I've heard. And I did love the book as a child.

Google says it was made up for the Borrowers. I'm not sure if that would put you off. I think it's really pretty.
The only thing is that Google also says it is supposedly from Harriet and now I can't stop hearing it as Harrietty but with a dropped H. I think that's just me thougg

Martha I know a kid called deezul. Nowadays people make them up to be unique. I'm finding that traditional names are rare which is why my ds's are Jonathon, Matthew, James and Christine (for my mum). They all have middle names relating to either our or their grandparents.

I'd go with Harriet personally with Hattie/Hettie/maybe Arietty as a nickname.

Think it would be better with an i on the end instead of a y. Then I think I would just think it was Italian .. It sounds quite nice

I do know of an Arrietty, with a sister called Isadora! I think it's a sweet name, and I love the books, but only you know whether you can cope with years of people saying "Harriety?" and looking puzzled.

People who have read the Borrowers will recognise its provenance immediately.
I quite like it but would sooner go for the Greek Ariadne instead.
I agree that people who don't recognise it will expect it has an H at the beginning, like Harriet.

I like it! Yes, it was made up for 'The Borrowers', but Wendy was made up for Peter Pan and Shakespeare created the name Jessica, so why not?

I know of an Arietty - I think it's very pretty. I immediately think of the Borrowers, I didn't realise it was a 'made up' name just for that book tbh - as a PP said a lot of 'proper' names were made up at some point!

I know an Arietty. When I first heard it I immediately thought of the borrowers, but her mum said not many people made the link. I prefer it to Harriet.

Yes, I think it was made up of the book and unlike other coined names, never really caught on.

So yes, I think it's still seen as weird but I think it's OK as a name.
