I've fallen in love with it. Knock some sense into me please!

I love the Borrowers and am always wondering if this could be used as a name. I think though it sounds too much like Harriet and would confuse people. also would she constantly have people say 'you're bigger than i expected'?

septembersunshine · 14/05/2016 19:47

I wouldn't use it. It sounds like a brand of air freshener or the name of sanitary towel brand somewhere in Europe. Not a person's name. And as others have said, it's only really a name known to readers of The Borrowers - outside of that it's obsolete. It is pretty but there are other similar sounding names out there.

What about Ariana?

septembersunshine · 14/05/2016 19:58

Amaretto! The Italian almond drink is what it reminds me off....

The Japanese film is quite well-known where I live - although I never realised it was based on The Borrowers!

Use it if you like it. No one will think a thing of it, in RL.

If you like it because of positive associations with the book, then that's a good reason to choose it.

IoraRua · 15/05/2016 18:21

I think it's gorgeous, and I hate Harriet.

ample · 15/05/2016 23:30

The film Arrietty comes to mind. It's not a strange name but how does it sound to you, saying it aloud over and over? Probably looks better on paper than say, you calling out Arrietty for supper.
Sounds far too 'aarr' to me.

PickleBot · 16/05/2016 19:32

I like it, she's a strong female character in a really good book. It's not like you want to call her Bellatrix or anything!

Heyheyheygoodbye · 16/05/2016 19:33

I think it's lovely Grin

JingsAndCrivens · 16/05/2016 22:15

Terrible. Don't do it.

PuraVida · 16/05/2016 22:33

What if she turns out to be 6ft tall? Shock

Meeep · 17/05/2016 10:21

I like it. I don't think it's too weird!

albertcampionscat · 17/05/2016 14:24

Now Bellatrix would be something. Bellatrix & Sirius for twins?

spankhurst · 17/05/2016 14:31

I don't like it, not because it's made up, it's just too pretty pretty for me. Ironic as it's not a million miles from my own name. Smile

BendydickCuminsnatch · 17/05/2016 14:34

There was an Arrietta on CBeebies birthdays this morning! Grin

IAmAPaleontologist · 17/05/2016 14:36

I think of the borrowers too but that doesn't make it bad! I like it. All names were made up at some point, at least I don't recall there being a big book of "proper" baby names handed to Adam and Eve once they'd figured out the sex thing.

mathanxiety · 18/05/2016 01:38

Arrietta is much nicer imo.

Fruityp · 01/07/2016 04:57

Oh my goodness some of the views on here are so rude considering your discussing what to name your daughter! My daughter is called Arietty and personally we've had nothing but positive feedback from using it. He everyday name is Ettie which everyone finds easy to say and then we use Arietty formally. Most people have heard of the borrowers or the film and get the connection. We also dropped one of the R's to make it shorter. I say if you love it, go for it because I'm really glad we did! X

funnyperson · 01/07/2016 05:02

I loved Arietty in the books, the way she wanted to know about the outside world and humans and didn't accept that the Borrowers had to be quiet and invisible always and kept making her father anxious for her. I used to re read them in the holidays a lot when I was a girl.
I think its a really lovely name for a girl
I do like the ideas above of registering her under Harriet or Ariadne and calling her Arietty, though Arietty was a very different character to Ariadne so perhaps not!

TheFirie · 01/07/2016 05:44

Sweet and strong at the same time. I like it

KoalaDownUnder · 01/07/2016 05:45

It's prettier than Harriet, but also kind of weird. Awkward to say, awkward to 'hear' properly.

I wouldn't.
