What do you think? Dated or classic?

Funny, I was just saying to my mum today that I really like the name Susan. I do have a middle -aged aunt called Susan, so I understand the association but I love my middle aged aunt! And I think the name is classic and underused. Plus Susie is a gorgeous nickname.

A4Document · 28/04/2016 18:33

Susan is a lovely name and I think it's time for a comeback.

Marcipex · 28/04/2016 19:01

Lovely name.

DaisyFranceLynch · 28/04/2016 19:10

I love it. I have a couple of middle aged female relatives called Susan but I also know a Susan in her twenties who goes by Susie (lovely nickname). I think it's a very pretty name, and quite unusual these days.

Suzanne feels more 70s/80s to me (as opposed to Susan which was popular a couple of decades before that).

LadyAntonella · 28/04/2016 19:25

I'm not terribly keen sorry. Don't like Susannah or Suzanne much either. Suzy / Susie is a cute nn though.

winewolfhowls · 28/04/2016 19:36

Love it. Going to steal for our list

Spandexpants007 · 28/04/2016 19:37

Awful but suzie suzie is nice

cornishglos · 28/04/2016 23:42

Love it.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 29/04/2016 00:14

I like it - I know one in her mid-twenties. It does make me think of Swallows and Amazons and Narnia, but they're nice associations!

I often link names to books though - Veronica is the Sadlers Wells books, Lucy is Narnia, Jo is Little Women etc.

looki · 29/04/2016 00:41

Its awful. Its heavy, clunky, plain and Susie was voted one of the most awful names of all time on a recent name related list (of course there are many lists but that it even appeared speaks volumes).

Susannah is better by a country mile.

Beeziekn33ze · 29/04/2016 01:02

Like it. And Suzanne, Susannah, and Susie. More important though YOU like it. 😉

Catmuffin · 29/04/2016 09:17

What names were voted the best names in the poll looki?

TheNewStatesman · 29/04/2016 12:05

I kinda like it just because it sounds a bit different right now.

MargotLovedTom · 29/04/2016 12:11

Susie was voted one of the most awful names of all time?! Really?!! I find that gob smacking tbh.

FuckoffJournoScum · 29/04/2016 12:26

Makes me think Pratchett.

looki · 29/04/2016 13:28

Catmuffin there wasn't a list of 'best' names as far as I remember. The other names weren't ones I'm familiar with. Susie stuck in my head because it is a name I'm very familiar with (family).

capercaillie · 29/04/2016 13:32

Like it - I know a Susan in her late 30s. Unusual even then. Goes by Susie though.

Love Susannah though and would have used it but the Susan I know is a close family member so possibly confusing.

MaliksMalik · 29/04/2016 15:57

I reckon you'll be about 10 years ahead of the trend if you use it now. As the 40s generation are now well into their 70s, in a decade or so it'll begin to be used in tribute to mums/grans and will go nuclear.
I reckon Angela, Linda, Janet/Jane/Jean and possibly Pamela and Barbara will come back hard too.

I don't dislike it but if I was going for a 'mum chic' name I prefer Jean (on the list for dd2 who is now a 4 year old boy not named Jean!) or Linda, prettier names than Susan IMO, also I don't like Sue or Susie, but go for it! I don't think it'll ever be a millstone name.

ccsays · 29/04/2016 17:53

Well, it certainly seems to be a marmite name! I can't believe Susie was voted one of the worst names ever though Confused It did make me think of Narnia too and at least she wouldn't be one of ten Ellie/Eva/Ella/Edies.

we have a young Susan at our primary school. Maybe the comeback has already started!!

A4Document · 30/04/2016 00:28

David Mitchell and Victoria Coren-Mitchell have a daughter called Barbara.

GraysAnalogy · 30/04/2016 00:29

Old fashioned to me

SealSong · 30/04/2016 00:44

Susan is too dull and middle aged imo (sorry, Susans). I much prefer Sarah which is similar but more classic and beautiful.

TheDowagerCuntess · 30/04/2016 06:39

There is a lot to be said for having a name that's a decade, or even a generation, ahead of the curve. By the time she's in her prime, the name will be popular again, and she'll have it as an adult, rather than as a baby. It will sound fresh, and she'll be the only one of her age group with it.

I speak from experience - my name was a total 'mum name' when I was given it in the 70s, I've never actually met anyone else with my name, but now it (and its variations) dominate the top 10 baby name charts.

Go for it!

MardleBum · 30/04/2016 06:41

It's very dull. I prefer Suzanne.
