Hi,

Never thought of joining a parenting site before, but I am due a little boy. We need some help with the spelling of his name.

We are going for Ty-Reece/Tai-Reece/Ty-Rhys/Tai-Rhys.

Which one would you pick?

Thank you all, we spend 7 months thinking of a name, so glad we have one, but now the bloody spelling!

If I heard it id automatically guess at the spelling Tyrese.

Out of your options I like Ty-Reece best :)

MiddleClassProblem · 27/04/2016 18:43

I know it as Tyrese/Tyreese

HelpWith · 27/04/2016 18:44

I know, but we are having it as 2 separate names Smile

Literally none of them

MiddleClassProblem · 27/04/2016 18:48

Grinvince

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 27/04/2016 18:48

Out of your options, Ty-Reece. I think all the other options will result in mispronunciation from time to time. :)

I do prefer Tyrese though, but appreciate you want two separate names.

I'm with Vince

Watto1 · 27/04/2016 18:50

Ty is the Welsh word for house (pronounced tee) so I wouldn't team it with the Welsh spelling Rhys. It would translate as Rhys's house!

VinceNoirLovesHowardMoon · 27/04/2016 18:50

Tyreece is perfectly fine by the way.

Daffolill · 27/04/2016 18:51

I've only seen/heard it as tyrese any particular reason you want it as 2 separate names? Just seems to be over complicating things.

VoldysGoneMouldy · 27/04/2016 18:55

I'm with Vince. Why do they need to be hyphenated? They are two separate names. And they will just be blended into a single name, as they're both 'sound' names.

Rhys by itself, however, is nice. And YY to the point about Ty meaning house.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/04/2016 18:58

Also keep in mind that you kid's name will automatically spelled Tyrese and having to correct people all the time.

Voteforpedr0 · 27/04/2016 19:01

How about Ty with rhys as a middle name ? Like Ty Pennington, he suits his name very well.

MarieJeanne · 27/04/2016 19:04

which one would I pick? None of them

BendydickCuminsnatch · 27/04/2016 19:17

Just looked it up and Ty Pennington's Ty is short for 'Tygert' Confused

Ty Burrell's a Tyler.

I like Ty actually. Sounds friendly.

Luciferbox · 27/04/2016 19:20

Another Welsh one here who would say Ty as Tee. I have taught a Tye said as Tie.

Tygert Confused

MarieJeanne · 27/04/2016 19:33

Actually, that's quite interesting that Ty is Welsh for house as I live in Brittany and it is also Breton for 'chez' or at the house of..
It's also pronounced Tee

Squashybanana · 27/04/2016 19:38

Oh dear, op. Most Mumsnet boys are called Conrad or Jolyon. I think you might get a hard time for your choice.

I'd go with Tyreece, if forced to choose...

Naoko · 27/04/2016 19:39

MarieJeanne - Welsh and Breton are actually very closely related, they're both Brittonic languages.

OP - They're both lovely names, but yes, if you use both, it'll just get spelled Tyrese. Which is also perfectly nice, and would just seem a lot easier for everyone.

PattyPenguin · 27/04/2016 19:44

Ty is Breton for house. Ty Loïc means Loïc's House and Ty Braz means Big House, for instance.

For that matter, Tigh is Scottish Gaelic for house. Irish speakers will be able to say whether they use the same word.

Some words are very similar in most or all of the Celtic languages.

Anyway, back to the OP's suggested names, in Welsh "tai" is the plural of "tÅ·", so although it would indeed be pronounced like "tie" (i.e. the neckwear, with Rhys it would mean "Rhys' houses".

Sophronia · 27/04/2016 21:26

I'd spell it Tyrese

Gummibaers · 27/04/2016 22:03

To me, Tyrese looks like a girls name, like Terese.

From your options I would probably choose Ty-Reece.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 27/04/2016 23:05

Tai and rhys

Or tax and rats according to autocorrect

MiddleClassProblem · 28/04/2016 00:17

Tygert reminds me of Tagart
