Don't use any names with -wyn at the end - that's a masculine ending. It's like wanting an Italian name and calling the little girl Francesco or Paolo. The feminine ending is -wen.

And Megan doesn't have an 'h' in it. It's a diminutive of Meg. Anyway, 'g' is never pronounced 'j' in Welsh - I presume the 'h' was inserted (in the US?) to stop English speakers unfamiliar with the name pronouncing it Mejan or Meejan.

A few more ideas:
Olwen - due for a revival, I reckon - heroine in one of the medieval legends
Carys - variant of Cerys
Cadi - diminutive of Catrin, equivalent to Kate
Delyth
Glynis
Manon - yes, there's a French name Manon, but that's a diminutive of Marie, the Welsh name means 'girl' or 'woman', as does Rhian, though Rhian originally meant 'queen'
Nerys

Love Welsh names:

Olwen
Siwan
Elinor
Catrin
Llinos
Mair
Eleri

so many lovely names to choose from.

Ffion3107 · 11/04/2016 21:46

PattyPenguin disagree with Wyn sounding as bad as Paolo in Italian! My daughter's Elsi Wyn and it is a popular middle name in Wales.

More names:
Mared
Cari
Casi
Glesni
Greta
Nel
Efa
Mari
Nansi
Grug
Medi

Carys
Olwen

Ffion, Wyn as a standalone middle name is, as you say, fine for a girl - it's regarded as a sort of semi-surname, particularly as there is a surname Wyn/Wynne. Mynediad Am Ddim even had a song called 'Beti Wyn' (showing my age now!)

However, -wyn as an ending to a name is most definitely masculine.

Alwyn, Arwyn, Carwyn, Dilwyn, Gerwyn, Heddwyn, Tecwyn, Tegwyn are all masculine names.

The girls' names are Bronwen not Bronwyn, Arianwen not Arianwyn, Anwen not Anwyn.

PattyPenguin Blush should've read your first post twice!
Like calling a girl Georgio instead of Georgia in English Grin

butteredmuffin · 12/04/2016 22:33

I really like Ceri and Elen - which I suppose are the Welsh variants of Kerry and Ellen, but prettier IMO.

YourLeftElbow · 12/04/2016 22:58
