I really love this name for dc4 but I know through searching previous threads on here its very disliked... 🤔

Still the case?

I can't see how it's 'uglier' than Aurora or something like that..

Just wondered your thoughts?

😀

Thanks x

You're bashing every negative opinion you've been given so why don't you just use it if you like it that much? Hmm

n0ne · 16/04/2016 09:37

Oo, I like!

SabineUndine · 16/04/2016 10:26

It's French and I think it's very very old-fashioned in France, so I wouldn't.

Raines100 · 17/04/2016 09:21

I'm familiar with the name Augustine for a boy, so at first glance, I assumed this was a male European variant of Albert. I seem to be in the minority, though. Still, Albertina?

Other than that, I think it's fine. If you absolutely love it, then its great, perfect even. I don't see any reason for ridicule. It's not grim (I agree, Maud is my definition of grim), it's just not popular, but we can't all be called Olivia or Ava or Grace.

You said you love the 'bert' sound and its connotations. This was the most compelling criterion for my choice of name for DD (different sound does it for me). Knew I'd regret not picking a name with that sound in it.

Not keen, sorry.

Lilicat1013 · 17/04/2016 18:06

I actually think it is really pretty although I imagine it would be hard to live with considering all the negative responses it is getting. It is very likely to be shortened so I would suggest choosing and occasionally using a prefered shortened version early on so people are more likely to use that rather than one you like less.

AlleyCatandRastaMouse · 17/04/2016 18:09

Not a fan. It is one of the masculine/feminine names that still sounds very masculine IMHO.

Gummibaers · 19/04/2016 08:24

I quite like it, looks like the feminine version of Albert.

Grufalosfriend · 19/04/2016 13:31

I prefer Albertine and Amandine over Aurora. Or how about Allegra?

TinyTear · 19/04/2016 13:50

i know a 2yo Albertine, she is lovely.

JollyXmasJumper · 19/04/2016 14:00

What Sabine said. Not granny chic at all, quite the opposite. Think of it as Pauline in the UK. Albertine would be bridge friends at the retirement home with Yvette, Georgette and Denise. Basically "boy name + feminine ending" French names very often have that outdated/redneck feel to them. (Not being mean, mine is one of these!)

Footle · 19/04/2016 14:11

I think it's a great name, and the Albertine rose is beautiful.

Grufalosfriend · 19/04/2016 14:13

Pauline, Albertine and Yvette - all old names that are so underused these days. It's just a matter of time before they become fashionable again.

I actually think Albertine would be cute for a little girl.

Footle · 19/04/2016 14:14

Here :

Albertine
ABitAsleep · 19/04/2016 14:59

Ooooh no! It's awful! Confused A very unfortunate name for a little girl in my opinion.

It's almost as if you were expecting a little boy and were going to call him Albert, but a little girl came out instead and you just stuck a bit on the end to make it sound more feminine which it doesn't really

Or as if you are naming after a fusty old relative (Great Uncle Albert who died in the war, etc, etc) but couldn't think of any way to incorporate his name so you just stuck it on her.

It sounds far to masculine, heavy, old and fusty for a beautiful baby girl, or even a teenager or older woman.

SleepyRoo · 19/04/2016 15:02

Sweet. But not nn Tina.

HailGallaxhar · 19/04/2016 15:06

I don't like it either, even though I like strong girls names and don't go for cutesy ones. It does look like a boys name that has been adapted so it can be used. I don't like Thomasina or Nigella for the same reasons.

CrookedTiara · 19/04/2016 15:20

Top tip; if nobody else has thought to use it, it's usually for a very good reason

Yes, and we should all call our children Jack and Olivia or face huge fines. Hmm

Albertine is great. And whether or not you like it, it is an actual name - the OP didn't pull it out of her ass. Don't any of you read Proust? Grin

The only Albertine I know in this country is the daughter of a famous novelist, who must now be in her late teens or early 20s.

Lalalili · 19/04/2016 15:27

I'm not keen on the nn Tina so would't use it for that reason

CrookedTiara · 19/04/2016 15:29

Al or Allie seem perfectly possible nicknames? I don't care much for Tina either.

MeMySonAndl · 19/04/2016 15:30

No, sorry

Mottled · 19/04/2016 20:26

Bertha.

1horatio · 19/04/2016 21:40

I like it. It's really pretty!! I also like Albertina :)

I've never found a mug with my name on it. Never bothered me, tbh :)

Footle · 20/04/2016 09:26

Much better to find a rose with your name on it anyway ( see photo above ).

MissBattleaxe · 20/04/2016 09:33

I think its pretty. It reminds me of the Victorian fashion for feminising the father's name for the daughter. In the French Lieutenant's Woman there is an Ernestina (nn Tina), but Albertine is prettier.
