I have been agonising over names for a long time. There are lots I liked, but none I loved.

We are having a girl! (yay) At every scan, she pushes her footprint up and the doctor has printed us out several photos of her little white footprint, even at the very early scans. I had "Olwen" on our (very long) list but I only liked it, and wasn't 100% sure about it.

The name Olwen means "little white footprint".

Anyway, I was at a scan yesterday and up appeared this lovely little white footprint again, and the doctor stopped the screen and said "oh look at her beautiful little foot". I actually welled up a bit, and thought "her name is Olwen"

I just want to pick a lovely name for our little girl. Do you think its a nice name?

Ceri was it this one your teacher read you? My granny (not Welsh but lived and worked in Mid Glamorgan when I was little, and taught herself Welsh, so lot of happy Welsh memories) had it.

Not sure if it's a translation or in Welsh but the pictures are gorgeous!

Bog it was!! And there was only one left so it must be fate- I've bought it! Thank you. Can't wait to be reunited with it!

It reminds me too much of "olwyn" but I think if you're outside Wales that won't be a problem :)

She will have her own music. The Dream of Olwen.

Perfect! Make sure you take newborn footprints and often thereafter.

Awww if I had named my daughter that way she'd be called ass cheeks.

Slighty off topic, but i had several dreams of my first baby when I was pregnant. It was always a baby girl called a particular name. We did not find out her sex, though I 'knew'. I 'knew' to the extent that we didn't consider boy's names or other girl's names.

Olwen is a lovely name - I have only heard it once before. And lovely that the name has meaning.

How lovely! Grin Enjoy!

Thank you all so much for replying. I showed this thread to dh and he was unsure before but now is happy to go for it!
So thank you all for your help and encouragement on this thread. I have read the story mentioned above, and I absolutely love the name Olwen now, so am delighted. Thanks again for helping to name my daughter x

It could always be a middle name if your not sure. Either way, first or second it's a lovely story and a lovely name. My first daughter is called Charlotte after 'Queen Charlotte' street in Bristol where we met! It's good to have a story :)

Florrie21 · 19/03/2016 15:09

I think it is a beautiful way to choose her name, it has a story that is very personal, and it sounds as though it feels perfect for you. Congratulations and good luck.

I love it and love the story! Go for it! It will be great to tell her about when she is older.
