I have been agonising over names for a long time. There are lots I liked, but none I loved.

We are having a girl! (yay) At every scan, she pushes her footprint up and the doctor has printed us out several photos of her little white footprint, even at the very early scans. I had "Olwen" on our (very long) list but I only liked it, and wasn't 100% sure about it.

The name Olwen means "little white footprint".

Anyway, I was at a scan yesterday and up appeared this lovely little white footprint again, and the doctor stopped the screen and said "oh look at her beautiful little foot". I actually welled up a bit, and thought "her name is Olwen"

I just want to pick a lovely name for our little girl. Do you think its a nice name?

Sorry kisses out of habit!!

Bog- it's a wonderful story. I can still remember sitting in my primary school at about 9 years old and my teacher reading me the part about Olwen. I was absolutely mesmerised, I can remember the beautiful illustrations!

Jemimapuddleduk · 11/03/2016 12:48

What a lovely story and I think the name is gorgeous.

grumpmitchell · 11/03/2016 12:52

What a beautiful story. Olwen must surely be her name!

deepdarkwood · 11/03/2016 12:52

Awww, lovely name and lovely story (both yours and the story of Olwen/the white flower footprints from the Mabinogion) - we dithered about dd's name until she was born - dh took one look at her and said she's 'X, look at her' I'd be holing out for Y all along - but he was quite right. She would have been all wrong as Y (a nice, rather pretty and fey girls name - the opposite of dd!!)

Congratulations, OP!

Beautiful story, beautiful name! You have to call her Olwen now, this is part of your families story Smile

MadameDePompom · 11/03/2016 13:14

I'm not a fan, it's on a par with Blodwyn (although maybe Olwen fans love Blodwyn too).

Footle · 11/03/2016 13:14

Bookday, it's pronounced just as it looks ( well the w might come out a bit different in Wales , but not much ). Fabulous name and story to go with it. Of course it's the only name for her.

GreatFuckability · 11/03/2016 14:29

Yeah as its spelt. OL-wen.

LovelyBranches · 11/03/2016 15:17

Op my DS got his name after a baby scan. My husband left the scan mucking around and joking saying 'I have an heir', 'behold, my son'. When we looked at baby names we discovered a name that means behold, a son. That decided his name.

Love the name Olwen, but I also love the spelling Olwyn.

ImperialBlether · 11/03/2016 15:22

Reuben, Lovely?

LovelyBranches · 11/03/2016 15:25

Indeed Imperial

TheBoysMamma · 11/03/2016 15:30

Lovely name :)

Icanseeclearly · 11/03/2016 15:50

I know an Olwen (I'm not in Wales) it's a lovely name and a lovely story to go with it. Congratulations Flowers

harryhausen · 11/03/2016 16:25

I'm Welsh. I do like it, however I can't help thinking it's too close to Olwyn which means 'wheel'. I don't want to put a downer on it as Olwen is a proper name and really traditional. You may use the nn Olly which is nice too.

I think I'm the welsh name police though as I had a friend who was going to call her dd Arian (which a name book had said meant silver). In day to day Welsh it means 'money'.

YellowPirate · 11/03/2016 18:01

I think it's lovely - it was my dgm's name and we will use it as a middle if this one is a girl.

The story is fantastic. We have a similar story for our girl's name and my dh won't entertain any other names at all! Xx

What a lovely name, and I love the story too (sob!) I think you should go with it! X

Oakmaiden · 11/03/2016 20:08

the Scottish Gaelic word for 'money' is also a word for 'silver'

Which makes sense, really. Since, you know, coins were mostly made out of silver...

Qwebec · 12/03/2016 03:52

french word for money is also silver, never realised it before!

Olwen is v breautiul and I'm sure she will be quite proud to know she played a role in the choice of her name.

FlorisApple · 12/03/2016 04:03

Love Olwen. It's beautiful. And I do believe children have a hand in choosing their own names. We had a different name picked out for my daughter, but when she came out, my husband said: she looks like a "----" and I agreed with him, so that's what we called her.

Beautiful name and beautiful stories (both in real life and the myth)

Awrstickthekettleon · 12/03/2016 08:33

It's perfect, she will love hearing that story when she grows up Smile x
