Dotty means crazy.

I agree with biscuit that Dorothea is a good option - it's prettier than Dorothy in my opinion, less old-fashioned, and gives a better choice of nicknames. If she wants to become Thea when she's older she can.

I'd steer clear of Dottie (crazy). And I can't say Dot without hearing "Great Aunt..." in the back of my head.

I love it. DD1 has it as a middle name after my grandmother. My grandmother went by Dodie. I also know one mid 30s who is a very steady, independent woman, and who goes by Dot

I have a four year old Dorothy so I am biased but I think it's a beautiful under used name and it suits my DD.

We did think she'd be a Dot but she's 100% Dorothy.

Obviously some people are not so keen!

I have a 2 yr old Dorothy known as Dotty or Dot (or sometimes the Dotster). She is totally crazy and full on and it suits her so much.

My older DD has a name which meets with almost universal approval (except on here sometimes) so we were a bit apprehensive about choosing a name which we knew divided opinions but we love it.

We know a Dora and a Thea so wouldn't have chosen Dorothea. I also think that's a bit of a mouthful and quite clumsy sounding. I'm not sure why lots of people on here seem to prefer it to Dorothy

I love Dorothy but unfortunately my dh doesn't. My nanna was a Dorothy and she had he nickname Dolly.

Not a pretty name imo. and Dot, Dottie and Dodie sound awful imo. I'm not a fan of Dora either.

I love Dorothea though- especially nn Thea. Doro might's be bad as a nn.

I think it's a lovely name. It is pretty and strong. It makes me think of The Wizard of Oz which is a good thing.

I like it. My Great-Auntie Dot was quite a character so I have good associations with it. DH wouldn't even agree to it for the cat, though.

Dorothea is nicer I think. I can see Dot working as a nickname though, not so keen on Dottie.

I know someone with a toddler called Dotty and I have to say I don't like it because it reminds me of someone acting slightly crazy!
