Final 3 boys names - I hope!

Hi all,

These are the names we have narrowed our list down to!
DH is Irish and grew up in Ireland. I'm English and we live in England.
Our top name for ages was Rex but I quite like a name I can shorten and you can't shorten Rex. I also stupidly mentioned it to parents and was met with 'do many humans get called that?' Which put me off slightly.
Corey and Seamus are recent additions to the list. Dh loves Seamus for its Irish roots and I have to admit Its really grown on me. Shay or Seami are cute nn's.
We both love Corey but have a feeling it would have mixed reactions. I've heard it can be slang for penis but i've grown up in or near London and never heard it so wonder if people think this is an issue?
Please be kind as it has taken months for us to come up with any kind of list!

Thanks for all the opinions ladies!
Seamus is the clear winner and the one we are leaning towards.
I must admit I still have my reservations. Do you think Seamus will seem very old fashioned Irish or is it making a come back? Im happy to choose a traditional irish name but don't want to choose something that would come across dated to all of dh's Irish family.
Also, he will be half Irish and will grow up in England so will have an English accent, would this put you off using such an obviously Irish name?

Seamus is my favourite, with Rex a close second.

Don't like Corey at all.

NoCapes · 22/02/2016 13:43

I'd say Corey is the best of a bad bunch there, and only because it would sound lovely in an Irish accent

jezzathebezza · 22/02/2016 13:46

hi OP, I thought it came pretty close between Seamus and Rex.
If he'd be growing up in England, with English accent I'd say def go for Rex- and love this name by far the most anyway.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 22/02/2016 13:48

I'm in Scotland and I know a Seamus, a Shay and a Sé. All primary age.

I also Like Cormac and Ciar and Feargus/Fergal and Finn if you are looking for other Irish names.

jezzathebezza · 22/02/2016 13:49

Also love Cormac

OneMagnumisneverenough · 22/02/2016 13:53

Seamus is Irish James in the same that Hamish is Scottish James is it not? Being in England doesn't stop loads of folk using Hamish so I would think it's would be the same for Seamus.

Borninthe60s · 22/02/2016 13:59

Seamus is lovely, I know ones and he gets Shay

Rex - dogs name

Corey - slang name for man's penis

Daphnedolittle · 22/02/2016 14:08

Yeah it seems to be split between Rex and Seamus. They are such different names.
I think a baby seamus would be super cute.

We also like Ruairi and Tadhg, but I'm worried about the spelling issue over here.
I'm not as keen on the pronunciation of Rory spelt the a English way.

Don't take anything bornin60s says seriously, clearly the name suits as they are going on such outdated, old fashioned associations that no longer exist with either name.

KatieT12 · 22/02/2016 18:05

Aw, I like Corey!

Second best would be Rex, but the NN Sea is cool

Borninthe60s · 22/02/2016 21:04

OP
"Don't take anything bornin60s says seriously, clearly the name suits as they are going on such outdated, old fashioned associations that no longer exist with either name."

In response to this, quite frankly you don't have to take mine or anyone else's response seriously. However you'd asked for opinions and that was mine. Rex as it was my childhood dog and Corey as in the part of the country where I live this is definitely, currently being used as slang for penis.

Quite why my user name should be associated with my comments astounds me.

Borninthe60s · 22/02/2016 21:07

As someone once said to me, whatever name you choose, there'll always be those that don't like it but they'll love the child and learn to like the name. Choose what you love the most and what he looks like when you see him. Congrats and good luck.

Daphnedolittle · 22/02/2016 23:15

borninthesixties I have no issue with your initial post and I do want a broad range of opinions. I definitely want to know if a name is slang for penis. Are you in or around London by any chance? I've been told it's a north London thing but could be wrong.
Thanks for all the comments everyone, definitely food for thought!

Dont like Seamus, reminds me to much of a 50 year old farmer.
Res is alright but i like Cory better.

Its just to me Cory doesnt "go" with the rest of the 2 names.

Don't like Seamus ...farmer/ old red faced man propping up the bar here..
Like Rex
Like Corey but prefer Cormac (could use Corey as nn)

If you like the sh sound how about Sheridan ? There's lots of great Irish names.... Or just keep your shortlist and decide when he arrives...that's what we did as just could not pick one!

Haffdonga · 23/02/2016 20:26

No! Seamus has floppy dark hair and deep green eyes with a naughty twinkle and a deep gentle voice.

Ludways · 23/02/2016 20:28

Seamus

Rex
Corey

Myredcardigan · 23/02/2016 20:37

Seamus is handsome and cool. Rex too. Corey is too American 80s for me.
I love Fergus too!

PixieChops · 23/02/2016 20:43

I also like Seamus the best out of the 3.
I'm not from London but heard that Cory is Cockney rhyming slang for "morning glory" not too sure which part of London it's from if anyone can shed some light.

Daphnedolittle · 23/02/2016 21:15

Ok I'm adding Ruairi/Ruari to the list!
I think I prefer the second spelling as it's easier to read and pronounce here.

I'm a bit worried about Seamus. Some of the 'old man propping up bar' comments have confirmed my fears that it might be a bit too old fashioned Irish. I want him to like his name.
Someone suggested Cormac - I like that and will add to list! Smile

nonicknameseemsavailable · 23/02/2016 23:30

I would say Seamus

Cormac is cool too.

I don't think of old men at all. They are both traditional, well known enough to not be seen as odd and masculine which I think is important for a boys name.

I don't like Corey - it is very 90s to me and very American.

not a fan of Rex I am afraid

torthecatlady · 24/02/2016 02:18

Seamus is absolutely lovely with the Irish roots.
Really don't like the other names, just my opinion though, obviously Grin

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 24/02/2016 02:57

I like Ruairi!

We live in the midlands & DS2 has a school friend called Ruairi. Everyone seems to cope fine with the pronunciation of it Wink.

Of your three original names;

Rex - dog, cat or King.

Seamus - I only hear "shame us" which isn't terribly positive. Sorry!

Corey - don't like. In these parts it's often in a sib set with Kyle, Kayden, Jayden, Tyler etc. and heard more screeched than spoken Blush. I may be thinking of the two Corey's I know of however - and of course they may not be representative of little Corey's as a whole!

I also really like Evan. There is a little Evan in DD's Reception class (Irish family).
