Name decided - to MIL's disgust.

So our daughter finally arrived 10 days late in the car park outside the hospital! Thank you to everyone on here who helped us to choose her name, which we love. She will be Sylvie and registered as Sylvia. We just ran it by my MIL who hates it and was very rude about the whole thing. Mainly because she had already decided we were calling her Martha and has been banging on about it for months. Trouble is we don't like it!
Now we need a middle name to go with Sylvia so we can officially announce her name and drive it home to MIL that she's not getting her way. Any help with this? Nothing too popular please and also we think one syllable names work best with Sylvia. Xx

oh and I like Sylvia Joy, Sylvia Grace and Sylvia Rose from the previous suggestions.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 18/02/2016 18:20

I'm inclined to go along with Mitzy's no nonsense two finger salute approach... Wink Grin

Congratulations cupcake Thanks

AdoraBell · 18/02/2016 18:28

Another vote for Sylvia Rose.

Congrats Thanks

ScarletForYa · 18/02/2016 18:31

Yes, Sylvia Rose

MamaLazarou · 18/02/2016 18:36

Congratulations! I like Sylvia Jean.

TheScottishPlay · 18/02/2016 18:39

Sylvie Ruth
Sylvie Arden
Sylvie Cora
Sylvie Jayne

OhPuddleducks · 18/02/2016 18:41

Love this name. I know it's a bit 80s but I think Sylvia Louise sounds nice

Serioussteve · 18/02/2016 18:41

Really like Rose and Fern.

Really put your foot down with MIL or she will attempt to constantly undermine you.

Many congratulations on your bundle of fun :)

NerrSnerr · 18/02/2016 18:56

I like Beth, Joy, Rose or Grace.

Peyia · 18/02/2016 19:08

Lovely name, good choice.

Where did Martha come from?? I'm still shocked at how outspoken some people are. Fair enough if you are being outspoken about something that directly affects you but this is another level of arrogance.

Pigeonpost · 18/02/2016 19:13

Apparently the birth flower(s) for February are Violet and Iris. Both of which would work really well.

Or if you want a pretty but unusual name just to rub salt into MIL's wound how about Xanthe?

ample · 18/02/2016 19:17

Mainly because she had already decided we were calling her Martha..

Ha! I love it. This sounds very much like my MIL (who had a tantrum at the foot of my hospital bed when DP announced the names we had chosen for our daughter which rather shockingly were not on her list ).
Thoughts of this still give me little nuggets of pleasure nine years on Grin

Congratulations on the arrival of Sylvia.
I like the suggestions of Joy and Rose, a single syllable second name would go perfectly with her first.

BeStrongAndCourageous · 18/02/2016 19:18

Sylvia Rosaline.

I love Sylvia Wren too. DD would have been Wren had someone not pointed out that with mine and DH's build, there was unlikely to be anything wren-like about her.

TBF, they were right!

ample · 18/02/2016 19:23

Forgot to say that yes, be firm right from the start. Repeat your daughter's name often in your MIL's presence (mine took weeks to say her name Hmm ) It is the only way to get through to people like her.

StinkyMcgrinky · 18/02/2016 19:24

Congratulations! Another vote for Sylvia Rose, gorgeous name. DC2 is due in July and if they turn out to be a DD they will have Sylvia as a middle name in honour of my lovely Nan.Grin

unicornthong · 18/02/2016 20:33

Sylvia is a beautiful, elegant name. I knew a fantastic one. Balls to your MIL!

CityFox · 18/02/2016 20:43

Sylvia Rose

cupcake30 · 18/02/2016 23:00

Thank you everyone! Fantastic suggestions, and so many of them! Now we've got a job on making a short list that is actually short. What we've got after reading through the thread is a list of lovely middle names that is as long as my arm! 😀

Myredcardigan · 18/02/2016 23:08

I believe Rose is the most common girls middle name at the moment or at least it was. Followed by Grace and May. Nothing wrong with any of them it's just that your op said you didn't want anything too popular.

woollytights · 18/02/2016 23:41

Leigh Smile

ollieplimsoles · 19/02/2016 08:14

congratulations op, love the name!

My mil also hijacked my daughter's name. We chose Penelope, nn Penny, mil didnt like it and told everyone we were calling her Nelly. We got lots of cards and gifts with the name nelly on it...

cheekstime · 19/02/2016 10:47

good luck with the MIL, sounds like you have a good handle on her though....its both your baby & NOT hers Angry.

Lovely name sugegstions above, so many I can't choose or add to them. All best, congrats Flowers

oldspeckledtam · 19/02/2016 22:46

I've read this whole thread thinking Sylvia Wren and I've been beaten to it. It's a fabulous choice though... Pretty, elegant and underused.

StarChaser99 · 19/02/2016 23:01

Congratulations OP. My grandma is a Sylvia and she is an incredible woman so I love the name. I think I would use it if I had another DD. Another vote for Sylvia Joy and Sylvia Rose.

SanityClause · 19/02/2016 23:11

I love Sylvia.

It makes me think of frosty mornings, when the sun is shining - all silvery.

I have two DDs, and Sylvia is my "name that got away".

I also like the connection with Sylvia Plath.
