So DH wants to go traditional but I want to be more playful re: DS2 name

We have a very short shortlist for DS2 due on 1st March. DH wants to go with Thomas Edward (Edward is in the family, Thomas or Tom is a good solid name) whereas I want to go with Jasper Edward (bit more playful, will be our last child so why not etc..). Any Jasper fans out there? DS1 is called James so there will be too Js!

I prefer Thomas

mydogeatsnutstoo · 17/02/2016 13:03

Not a massive fan of Jasper but I would definitely pick it over Thomas, which is just a bit dull. Jasper and James are a bit similar but I personally would not see that as a major issue.

thebiscuitindustry · 17/02/2016 13:09

Thomas Edward

Artandco · 17/02/2016 13:15

I wouldn't have jasper with James

Don't like Thomas either, sorry

-Casper Edward

  • Theodore Edward

The only Jasper association I have is the baddie in 101 Dalmations. Other than that a jasper is a slang name for a wasp around these parts.

There are no Jaspers in our primary so its not a name for a child I can place in RL, I'm ambiguous.

I do however have an Edward, he's the only one in the school as well so I would go with Edward Jasper personally :)

Ohlalala · 17/02/2016 14:15

I prefer Thomas.

PittedOlive · 17/02/2016 14:15

Jasper is hardly 'out there' - go for it. Thomas Edward is perfectly nice, and perfectly unexceptionable. It's like a name chosen by a committee devoted to producing nice classic, solid boys' names that no one could possibly have the slightest objection to.

mrslebon · 17/02/2016 14:33

ooo, Edward Jasper - quite it that way round!

I know, it's hardly 'out there' as you say but just a bit more fun than Thomas Edward. The only Jasper I've only known has been a terrier Smile but I love terriers so that's fine!

Edward Thomas is the best

Sophronia · 17/02/2016 14:49

I prefer Thomas Edward

alltouchedout · 17/02/2016 14:52

I love Thomas. DH hates it else with three ds's I would definitely have a Thomas of my own! Not a fan of Jasper myself but it's not a horrible name. I'm not at all keen on Edward though.

IssyStark · 17/02/2016 14:55

Go for it!

My first is one of many Alexanders in his school (it was a family name) whereas my second is the only Cornelius we know (also a family name).

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 17/02/2016 15:22

No sorry. It's awful. Just makes me think of Jasper Carrot. What about Casper. Do you like that. Tom is faultless, areal solid man's name.

Clarathemagnificent · 17/02/2016 15:31

I prefer Thomas Edward or Edward Thomas with the nickname Teddy. Not keen on Jasper at all sorry.

babyblabber · 17/02/2016 15:45

Love jasper!

pickmeupputmedown · 17/02/2016 15:49

Sorry, only Jasper I know is NDN dog. I'm a traditionalist with names so Thomas all the way.

ppandj · 17/02/2016 16:58

Could you have Edward as first name and nn Teddy?

mouldycheesefan · 17/02/2016 17:01

James and jasper are not a good combo.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/02/2016 17:03

Not keen on Jasper.

Edward or Thomas are perfect.

Floggingmolly · 17/02/2016 17:04

Why does a name have to be playful and fun? It's a name...
Jasper is neither, btw.

mrslebon · 17/02/2016 17:05

Not keen on Casper no - makes me think of the friendly ghost from my childhood! These are all really helpful comments by the way - keep 'em coming!

Jasper remind me of jasper carrot - not sure I think of it as a fun name.

Edward will get shortened to ted, ed or eddie - I quite like ted tbh.

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 17/02/2016 17:09

I think they sound great. Thomas, while a lovely name, sounds like the tank engine with Edward and James.

IoraRua · 17/02/2016 17:09

Edward Jasper is lovely.
I prefer Jasper to thomas but I do feel Jasper and James is a bit matchy. They won't be seen as a unit all their lives though so I wouldn't have it as a dealbreaker - they're not ridiculous together.

Artandco · 17/02/2016 17:54

Edward Jenson
