Help with welsh baby names!

Dh's family are welsh, and we're keen to use a welsh name for our baby.

The two we current like the best are Dylan for a boy and Ffion Gwyneth for a girl. Can anyone please suggest other welsh names for us to consider?

I'm not welsh at all, but a bit concerned that Dylan and Ffion are lovely names but a bit too popular - though that might not matter living in England. I was the most popular girls name for the year I was born and really want to avoid that for my baby!

Many thanks!

Ooh, Glyn is nice. Like that one! Told my mum that we were considering Dylan, met with silence. Never mind. I love it!

I wanted to name my son Ieuan but due to moving to England went for an English name. I felt it'd be too hard for people to say here. And we'd be forever spelling it.

whynogutfeeling · 10/02/2016 18:05

A friend of a friend has a girl called Magwyn (sp?) or maybe it's Magwen? I've never heard it before. They also have a boy called Gwion.

wheniwonder · 10/02/2016 18:37

I know an Eluned. Pronounced El - in -th.

tomatodizzy · 10/02/2016 18:46

Cerian

I have 2 sons named Tomos and Gwilym.

My English family have had no problem with either...Except they assume that Tomos is pronounced the same as 'Thomas'.

If we were to have other children then we probably would have chosen from:

Manon (my favourite welsh girls name)
Fflur
Elinor
Osian
Idris

AuntJane · 12/02/2016 23:43

For a girl, Valmai, Marged, Eirwen.

For a boy, Sion, Bryn, Talfryn.

Luciferbox · 12/02/2016 23:49

DH is Welsh and we live in Wales. My two are Tomos and Gruffydd. My English parents call them Tom and Griff. If they'd been girls they would have been Carys and Alys.
We also considered Ifor, Idris, Gethin, Iestyn, Ieuan and Huw for DS2.

I have a Welsh name and have never lived there, although mum is Welsh and I spent a lot of time there growing up due to family connections. I love it, always have, although I have to spell it out every time!

We have adopted so I did not choose my children's names but if I had given birth Ceridwen and Gwydion would have been my top Welsh choices. I do think Welsh names are glorious, good luck with whatever you choose.

Oooh many lovely names.... I'm not Welsh but my fave boys name is Aneurin and my mum has a female friend called Nest (circumflex over the e!) which I think is gorgeous....

We're going for Welsh first names in England (dh is Welsh and his family all have Welsh names) so need to consider spelling and pronounciation too.
I love Ieuan but we have 2 in the family and dh vetoed gethin and ianto (ianto didn't really meet my English friendly criteria!). So current boys favourite is Trystan. Girls choices are Catrin, Megan with our favourite being Nia.
Can't wait to meet little one now - hopefully less than 11 weeks to go!

LogicalTest · 14/02/2016 09:06

We have four Welsh nephews-Garin, Tristan, Iestyn and (my very favourite) Bryn.

Wordsaremything · 14/02/2016 21:38

Another vote for Cerian. Beautiful.

stressedtothemax77 · 15/02/2016 13:13

We are in England and have a Ieuan (yi-yan).
I love his name and there isn't another one (that I've found) around here. People always comment what a fab name, although the spelling and pronunciation usually cause some confusion!

Blushingm · 15/02/2016 17:04

Medi is September not June

ABitAsleep · 17/02/2016 12:12

I like Bryn and Taran (pronounced Tar-an) for boys - I knew an english Bryn from school who was lovely and totally suited his name.

For girls i like Carys and love Eilonwy (pronounced Eye-lan-we)

TinklyLittleLaugh · 17/02/2016 12:30

DS has the middle name Bryn. He's had a few Uncle Bryn jibes.

I think Dilys is a bit too Fireman Sam personally. And I'm not keen on the Welsh pronunciation of Dylan.

Personally I like (for a boy)
Eifion
Hefin
Iolo
Cadefo
All of them have messed with my autocorrect though and would be a pronunciation nightmare in England.

ThePartyArtist · 17/02/2016 13:17

OP - I think any names you are having to check pronounciation of are best avoided, as you can guarantee other non-Welsh people will be unsure too.

Elin is a good one if you want easy to pronounce and spell outside of Wales.

I'm Welsh, living in England, and always amazed at how many Welsh names bemuse people here. Names I think are fairly straightforward like Sian, Ceri and Gethin all cause confusion - not sure why!

Will be interested to follow this thread as I face a similar dilemma. Love Welsh names but they could be a lot of hassle here!

ButterIsAngelSpunk · 17/02/2016 15:39

I love Geraint for a boy

Tinkalinka · 17/02/2016 21:53

We lived in England for the first 3 years after having DS. He has a Welsh name that is difficult to read but once people were told correct pronunciation they always got it right. There were a few in his nursery with 'complicated' Welsh names so it's not that uncommon. I also know a 5 year old Gruffudd in London.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 18/02/2016 10:26

We have a DD called Celyn (Welsh for holly, pronounced kell-in). Lots of compliments on it :)

When we have DC2, if it's a boy his middle name will be Idris. Absolute favourite Welsh boys name!

Also love Taran, Deio, Dewi, Dylan, Macsen, Morgan, Iwan, Teilo, Huw and Tomos for boys.

Cadi, Cerian, Mabli, Haf, Seren, Angharad, Siriol, Llio, Llinos, Delyth, Alaw, Awel, Deryn, Mari and Manon for girls.

whynogutfeeling · 19/02/2016 17:40

I like Ioan a lot.
Celyn is fab Ovaries.
I live in Wales and have only ever known one Taran who was female?

Winifredgoose · 19/02/2016 17:42

I love the girls name carys. So pretty, and can be shortened to Carrie.
