Help with welsh baby names!

Dh's family are welsh, and we're keen to use a welsh name for our baby.

The two we current like the best are Dylan for a boy and Ffion Gwyneth for a girl. Can anyone please suggest other welsh names for us to consider?

I'm not welsh at all, but a bit concerned that Dylan and Ffion are lovely names but a bit too popular - though that might not matter living in England. I was the most popular girls name for the year I was born and really want to avoid that for my baby!

Many thanks!

Bleddyn or Carwyn for a boy

leoniethelioness · 03/02/2016 18:08

I love Mari and Alaw. Grufudd and Tomos too.

What about Penri or Emlyn?

Mali and Alys are pretty too.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 03/02/2016 18:11

I'm not Welsh, but wish I had had the excuse of some Welsh links to use the name Eluned. I think it's lovely.

My favourite Welsh boys names are Llyr and Llew but possibly not what you're looking for due to potential pronunciation difficulties.
I quite like Gethin and Gruffydd.
I like Angharad, Aeronwy, Elin, Eluned.

DanielSpaniel · 03/02/2016 18:32

Hi OP, Dilys is quite an old fashioned name and not heard that often these days (at least not where I live in N. Wales).
Dylan's a good choice & can be pronouned Dillon or D-uh-lan.

If you like Bronwyn, how about Branwen?

I don't know any Merryns or Merediths but do know Meirions, Meilir & Meredydd (all boys names).

Mali, Mabli & Mai are all nice girls names. Mari sounds quite similar to Merry

DanielSpaniel · 03/02/2016 18:33

*Meirion not Meirions!

figginz · 03/02/2016 18:37

I like Dilys though I think it's spelt like that. Also Nia and Erin.

Really love Huw. Welsh but still accessible?

soundsystem · 03/02/2016 18:45

eatyourveg you have very good taste in names! (My DD is an Arianwen and would have been Idris if she'd been a DS)

Bronwyn - no. Bronwen - a possibility.

-wyn is the masculine ending, -wen the feminine.

Bronwyn is like calling a girl Antonio or Flavio.

SpecialStains I'm not allowed Bryn on my list because of twin towns either. Whenever I suggest it, Dh goes "well fucking hot dogs it is then boy bach!" Which is apparently a quote from twin town. I am very northern english, Dh is valleys welsh He's also vetoed Delilah, even though that's not Welsh! Bloody Tom Jones...why why why?

I love Ceridwen, Eleri and Angharad. Osian, Emlyn and Iestyn. I met a Llwelyn once, who went by the nickname Louie.

Mclaren37 · 04/02/2016 01:15

I like the simplicity of Grif and Huw for boys.

SocksRock · 05/02/2016 15:54

Gwilym is Gwi-lim, the Welsh variety of William

The children speak Welsh with their dad, I understand a fair bit after 15 years, but I don't really speak much.

ktmummy1 · 05/02/2016 21:02

Ffion and Dylan are both gorgeous.

TwoTwentyGowerRoad · 05/02/2016 21:27

Eleri is the nicest Welsh girls name IMO.

jclm · 05/02/2016 21:31

Great thread!!!

We live in Wales and have Arwen Eirlys (girl) and Gethin Ieuan (boy). These are pronounced ayerlis (for Eirlys) and yi-yan (for Ieuan).

SpecialStains · 06/02/2016 18:42

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice on welsh pronunciation. It's hugely appreciated. There's a few new names on the list now as well!

Lovely names on here.

We're not remotely Welsh but Gwilym is the only boys name I like for my second son, due in a couple of weeks. Husband is not quite convinced (he likes Eldon and Hallam) but there's just nothing else that feels right.

Glyn? My brother and my nephews name 😊
