My grandma is called Audrey, which is one of the reasons I dislike it (long story). I also don't really like the sound of it, but that's not to say I like Aubree/y. I don't particularly like either.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/01/2016 15:23

The rapper Drake is called Aubrey.

MouldyPeach · 30/01/2016 15:24

I love it, it's unusual and will surely be a girl's name if you name a girl it! Think it needs a simple middle name though, one syllable like Rose, Lee, Jo etc

RudeElf · 30/01/2016 15:26

But I bet it only evolves one way, boys names becoming girls names. Won't hold my breath waiting for someone to say 'hmmm, Susan, that would work well for a boy

I'm not sure why that should prevent people using traditionally male names for their female children. Is it only ok if the boys do it to? Like, to validate the decision? Confused

GingerNutRiskIt · 30/01/2016 15:27

I know a few elderly men called Aubrey, and an uncle Aub. I wouldn't choose it for a boy, but definitely not for a girl.

JingsAndCrivens · 30/01/2016 15:29

So sorry to have confused you. But why are female names not considered suitable for boys if boys names are good enough for girls?

Bit odd this 'evolution' is only going one way.

GingerNutRiskIt · 30/01/2016 15:30

RudeElf you just reminded me of this song:

JingsAndCrivens · 30/01/2016 15:31

There have been lots of names over the years (Hilary, Shirley and so on) that stared out as boys names and are now firmly in the Girls Name category. I can't think of a single girls name that's come to be regarded as a boys name.

Why is that?

SnuffleGruntSnorter · 30/01/2016 15:31

I clicked just to talk about a bit named Sue!

RudeElf · 30/01/2016 15:35

But why are female names not considered suitable for boys if boys names are good enough for girls?

Erm, because of patriarchy. Most things 'female' are considered to be of less value than their 'male' equivalent. This is not new information.

I still dont see why that is relevant to OP choosing this name for her daughter.

JingsAndCrivens · 30/01/2016 15:37

You got it!

And that's why I wouldn't give a girl a boys name. It would be like me saying 'have a boys name, they're superior'.

JingsAndCrivens · 30/01/2016 15:39

Umm, because the OP wants to give her daughter a boys name. Kind of connected I'd have thought.

RudeElf · 30/01/2016 15:40

Love love love johnny cash and that song is a favourite. Grin My son has what is traditionally a girls name.

Yes but why does the fact that boys wont have girls names mean she shouldnt?

JingsAndCrivens · 30/01/2016 15:44

What's your son called?

Mclaren37 · 30/01/2016 15:44

I like it and also prefer the Aubrey spelling. Aubrey Rose is the nicest combo I think.

Yeah, right! Grin

JingsAndCrivens · 30/01/2016 15:47

I only asked because you said he has a girls name. Have never heard of a boy with a girls name before.

RudeElf · 30/01/2016 15:53

Well i'm not about to share it and out us all. It is his name (because its on him, a boy) not a girl's name but is a name that for a long time has been used for girls. It is a very identifying name particularly as he is one of only two i know to have the name as a boy (the other boy was named after his mother heard my son's name and loved it)

AverageSnowflake01 · 30/01/2016 16:39

I'm in UK.

I spell it with "ee" because I thought it looked prettier. When I looked up the name Aubrey, it's meaning meant Elf Ruler and its an English name. Had no idea it was a boy's name Confused.

And I quite like Bree for short.

Maybe that's why I like it! Grin

Sofiria · 30/01/2016 16:43

Rory Gilmore's full first name is Lorelei. I've also seen Rory as a nickname for Aurora, but never as a girl's name on its own.

Aubrey Rose is my favorite from your list. I like Malika (and Malaika) but don't think it flows as well with Aubrey as Rose does. I don't like the Aubree spelling, it's either overly cutesy or stripper-ish, depending on age - I feel the same way about most -ee names.

Wolfiefan · 30/01/2016 16:43

Use Bree.
It's an actual name.
Don't use a made up stupid spelling because it looks pretty. It actually makes it look like you just can't spell!
