Sailor?

Sailor is supposedly a German name in orgin, although different sites and information also suggest it could be English, as am I (both English and German that is). It obviously has connections to the sea and boats, as has my family for generations. Given the links, what do people think?

I like it!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 25/01/2016 19:37

Gorgeous.
Nabbing it for our short list

Fourormore · 25/01/2016 19:39

Not keen, sorry. Sounds a bit like a celebrity name.

LadyLuck81 · 25/01/2016 19:41

I immediately thought 'hello sailor' in really grubby tone which has put me off I'm afraid. It'd be every phone call, 'hello Sailor'.

I don't think I could do it.

nellyflora · 25/01/2016 19:41

My grandmother had a poodle called sailor, I didn't know it was a "proper name"😳 You learn something new every day.

Sorry I can't get past the rather camp poodle thing

Humble314 · 25/01/2016 19:42

Awful.. i think of 'hello sailor' too

Hamsolo · 25/01/2016 19:44

Yes. Hard to get over Hello Sailor isn't it? Especially as people would say it all the time.

JenniferAnistonsHair · 25/01/2016 19:44

I think it's quite cute for a child, but can't really picture it on an adult. I suppose it depends on your surname though...

sugarplumfairy28 · 25/01/2016 19:46

If it helps at all, we live in Germany and there isn't quite the same view of it. In fact they are seem somewhat bewilder by the name Miller...

Its Bristol Palins new daughters name, and I honestly have no idea how I know that.

KERALA1 · 25/01/2016 19:50

I think of very handsome gay men in stripes tops. You can't do it it's too cruel.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/01/2016 19:51

Oh dear. No.

TrojanWhore · 25/01/2016 19:53

I don't take to it.

I did wonder if Sailor was the younger sibling to Tinker, Tailor and Soldier.

ShesGotLionsInHerHeart · 25/01/2016 19:55

I think of the film Wild at Heart with Nicholas Cage. He was an ex-con and shagged Laura Dern all over the place. Grin

BossWitch · 25/01/2016 19:57

No. Just no.

StitchesInTime · 25/01/2016 19:58

I just can't get past the connection with.... well, sailors.

VoldysGoneMouldy · 25/01/2016 19:59

I think it would be a cruel thing to do to a child, and they would change their name as soon as they reached the legal age.

TiredAudreyTwoShoes · 25/01/2016 19:59

I think Liv Tyler's son is called Sailor, not sure if that's a good thing or not?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 25/01/2016 19:59

Not good.

WaitrosePigeon · 25/01/2016 20:01

Too try hard.

FanSpamTastic · 25/01/2016 20:05

We have a cousin in the U.S called Selah. (Girl)

SnuffleGruntSnorter · 25/01/2016 20:07

Not my cup of tea to be honest

Sunshine511 · 25/01/2016 20:09

It's not my cup of tea, personally. I think it's one of those names that would need a confident guy to be able to pull it off! I just think, if your child were to be more timid, they might wish they didn't have such a stand out name. So in summary, it could be okay on the right person but I certainly wouldn't choose it myself x

LumelaMme · 25/01/2016 20:11

Sorry, no: too much 'Hellooo, Sailor...'

Fan, isn't Selah a bit like 'Amen' (it crops up at the end of psalms)?

MerryMarigold · 25/01/2016 20:15

I just think you'd require a creative/ meeja/ actor type of job, and be destined for that before you were even born, which is a bit of a shame. Let your kid find their own destiny. You ain't gonna be a solicitor called Sailor now, are you?
